The Ministry of Magic

In the wizard world there is a Ministry of Magic. It is somewhat comparable to government. Their goal is to keep the muggles from knowing about wizards and magic. Here is some more info on it.

The Ministry of Magic is located somewhere just below the surface of downtown London. To get to the Ministry, you must head for an old shabby telephone booth down in a small graffiti filled alleyway. Once you get inside the booth, pick up the receiver, hold it above your head, and dial 6 - 2 - 4 - 4 - 2. After this you will get the receptionist. She first tells you to state your name and business. Then after you tell that, you will get small silver badges that tell your name and business to get into the Ministry. You are then told, if you are a visitor, to submit to a search and present your wand for registration at the security desk, which is the at the far end of the Atrium. Then the telephone booth goes down like an elevator to the Atrium. The Atrium is a very long and splendid hall with a highly polished, dark wood floor.

The peacock-blue ceiling was inlaid with gleaming symbols that were continually moving and changing like some enormous heavenly notice board. On each side of the Atrium, there were many gilded fireplaces. The fireplaces on the left side were for Arrivals, where every few seconds a witch or wizard would emerge. On the right side, short queues of wizards were forming before each fireplace, waiting to depart. In the middle of the Atrium there was a fountain. A group of golden statues, larger than life-size, stood in the middle of a circular pool. Tallest of the all was a noble-looking wizard with his wand pointing straight in the air. Grouped around him were a beautiful witch, a centaur, a goblin, and a house-elf.

The last three were all looking adoringly up at the witch and wizard. Glittering Jets of water were flying from the ends of the two wands, the point of the centaur's arrow, the tip of the goblin's hat, and each of the house-elf's ears, so that the tinkling hiss of water was added to the pops and cracks of Apparators and the clatter of footsteps as hundreds of witches and wizards strode toward a set of golden gates at the far end of the hall. As Harry passed the fountain headed toward the security desk, inside he saw lots of sickles and knuts inside the pool. A small sign on the fountain said:

All proceeds from the Fountain of Magical Brethren will be given to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

Harry got to the Security desk and a badly shaven man in peacock blue robes took Harry's wand and weighed it on a balance (this tells what type of wand it is). After they passed the Security desk they headed for the Elevator through the Golden Gates. They got in a very crowded elevator and went up. As the elevator went up the voice told what floor they were on and what is on that floor. This is a listing of the floors at the Ministry of Magic:

Level 10: Courtrooms
Level 10 cannot be reached by the elevator (lift). It is a corridor with rough stone walls and torches in brackets. There were heavy wooden doors with iron bolts and keyholes. At the end of the hall was a grimy dark door with an immense iron lock, this was Courtroom 10, the place of Harry's hearing.

Level 9: Department of Mysteries
The walls of this floor were bare, there were no windows and no doors apart from a plain black one set at the very end of the corridor. To the left of the door was a small flight of steps to Level 10.

Level 8: The Atrium
The reception area where all of the witches and wizards that work at the Ministry gather to head to work. The place has a dark wood floor with fireplaces on each side and a peacock blue ceiling that is inlaid with gleaming golden symbols that may be some kind of a notice board. In the Atrium there is the Fountain of Magical Brethren, and at the far end of the Atrium is the Security desk and a great pair of golden gates that lead to the elevators.

Level 7: Department of Magical Games and Sports
Including the, British and Irish Quidditch Headquarters, Official Gobstones Club, and Ludicrous Patents Office. This level is an untidy corridor with various posters of Quidditch teams tacked lopsidedly on the walls.

Level 6: Department of Magical Transport
Including the Floo Network Authority, Broom Regulatory Control, Portkey Office, and Apparation Test Center. On this floor, several paper airplanes swooped into the elevator, they were a pale violet color with Minister of Magic stamped on them. These were Interdepartmental Memos.

Level 5: Department of International Magical Cooperation
Including the, International Magical Trading Standards Body, the International Magical Office of Law, and the International Confederation of Wizards, British Seats.

Level 4: Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
Including the Beast, Being, and Spirit Divisions, Goblin Liaison Office, and Pest Advisory Bureau. A wizard holding a fire-breathing chicken got out on this level.

Level 3: Department of Magical Accidents andCatastrophes
Including the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, Obliviator Headquarters, and the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee.

Level 2: Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Including the Improper Use of Magic Office, Auror Headquarters, and Wizengamot Administration Services. This is the level at which Harry and Mr. Weasley got off. On this level they walked down a corridor lined with doors, they then went through a great pair of oak doors into an open area divided into cubicles. The sign told them that this was the Auror Headquarters. They walked through here and passed through another set of large oak doors into another passage, turned left, and followed the corridor and turned right into a small dimly lit shabby corridor and reached a dead end where they found a two doors. One led to a broom closet and one had a small lopsided plaque that read Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office.Â
