Short biography: Emma Thompson was born on April 15, 1959 to a family of actors. Her father, Eric Thompson, starred in the British television series The Magic Roundabout. Her mother, Phyllida Law, is a well-known Scottish actress, and her sister is actress Sophie Thompson, who starred in Emma. Thompson went to the Camden School for Girls, then proceeded to Cambridge University, where she studied English Literature. While at Cambridge, she became vice-president of the Footlights Comedy Club, and even dated fellow member and soon-to-be actor, Hugh Laurie. She married fellow Harry Potter star Kenneth Branagh in August 1988, but the couple divorced in October 1995. She is now happily married to actor Greg Wise, and they have one child, Gaia Romilly.

Thompson's role in the Potter films is that of divination professor Sybil Trelawney.
