Short biography: Born to deaf and mute parents, Richard Griffiths learned sign language at an early age. He also developed an ability to adapt a number of different accents, allowing himself to portray a variety of ethnic roles. He built an early reputation at the Royal Shakespeare Company where he gave brilliant, blown-up performances that earned him the esteemed reputation of being one of Britain's finest actors.
