Applying for a part in the Harry Potter films

Update:

The following is an extract from a letter received from Leavesden Studios by Emma (MuggleNet News, 18/04/04): -

At present we have all our requirements filled for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. However, should this situation alter in the future your details are on file to be referred to. Unfortunately we cannot accept applications outside of the United Kingdom.

Casting for Order of the Phoenix will not begin until next year and I can only suggest for you to look out for further notices on the official Harry Potter Website. In the meantime I hope you enjoy the next film - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - when it is released this June.

Casting has now closed for the Prisoner of Azkaban film.

Casting for Goblet of Fire will open in January 2004.

Only UK residents can apply.

If you would like to apply, send a short letter, photograph and stamped addressed envelope to:

Casting Office
Leavesden Studios
PO Box 322
Watford
Hertfordshire
WD25 7XJ

The studios have said that they will only accept applications via post, not by phone, fax or email.

Please note, this is the official address, and is not connected with Mugglenet. Please do not email us asking for more details, this is all the information that we have.

Why can't I apply if I'm not a UK resident? That's like... SO UNFAIR!

The problem with accepting people from overseas is that filming is done on non-consecutive days, and takes a long time, so it would be very hard for non-UK residents to apply because they would have to be in the UK many times, which would be expensive. Also, to work in the UK, you need to apply for a visa. The final problem is that, although you may do a very good “British” accent, it’s very easy for a native speaker to tell the difference between a faked and real accent, same as it’s easy to tell when a British person does an American accent. Fortunately, there are a lot of talented actors in the UK so as to have plenty of choice to choose the right people for the right roles.

Although it may seem unfair, there are good reasons for the policy, although it’s set by the casting office at WB rather than MuggleNet.  However, there are plenty of good movies that are open to Americans: however, if you want experience in acting, you could try applying for a role in a play in a local theatre, which is often good experience. Either way, good luck both now and in future!
