GoF Filming Report at Virginia Water Lake
Thanks to Zanaro for the report!
It seems Mike Newell is following in Alfonsos Cuaron’s Footsteps by Filming [at least part of] the Goblet of Fire at Virginia Water Lake in Surrey England.
The Car Park was surprisingly busy once again (for a weekday), with the crew taking up over half the car park. It wasn’t until we were by the lake though that we realised the crew were from WB and were filming another ‘Harry Potter’ movie.
A rather interesting looking and camouflaged man approached us by the lake, enquiring if we were here to watch the Harry Potter filming. Our first guess was that we had just stumbled on a photographer for one of the tabloids. But he didn’t seem to have a camera, although he did have a rather large pair of binoculars, and a suspicious looking bag. Whatever he was up to, he caught our attention, and we soon turned our attention to the filming across the Lake.
They’ve moved on further round the lake this year, Towards the Roman Ruins. And As we got closer to the site, The full scale of the location became apparent. Security guards were all over the place. To prevent too many onlookers getting in the way, the Pedestrian Path had even been blocked off with a detour created approximately 10 metres off the original one.
It wasn’t long before we spotted Emma Watson. Wearing a pink shirt and beige trousers, nothing odd there. But as she came off set she put on a mask, and proceeded to play conkers with a friend. Mask? How serious are Warner brothers about protecting their cast from conkers? Or could it be they are worried about snaps appearing in tomorrows ‘Sun’ or tabloid. It doesn’t make much sense for the whole cast to walk around in masks, so it probably was a ‘safety’ precaution, as it was only her wearing what could best be described as a welding/blowtorch mask.
The set occupies the area of the park which is “The Roman Ruins” . For those of you that don’t know, the ruins haven’t always been there. In the early 19th century they were taken from their original location in the Roman city of Leptis Magna close to present day Tripoli in Libya. The Ruins overlook the lake. For pictures of the site, and ruins I’ve found a page with photos you might want to check out.
The site is a fair walk from the entrance to the park, beyond the main waterfall.
The site wasn’t the only busy part of the set; It seemed that the crew were on the lake too this time. Something they avoided last year by creating an artificial lake scene at one point in the Azkaban filming. It looked like there was only one boat on the lake this afternoon with two crew members filming the set.
Bonnie Wright who plays the part of Ginny Weasley, was also seen wearing a rather bright orange shirt, and eating an ice-cream off set [fascinating stuff, well not really!].
The whole of the park is heaving with cars and huge trucks, which is strange as it is usually only the park rangers you see driving around. You can imagine how odd it is to be sitting by the lake, and see a jogger run past one moment, and see a black 4x4 [with blacked out windows] pass by the next
There are pinstriped tents and areas for the actors to rest in close to the set. Yada Yada Yada. Looks like there’s a cafeteria tent too this year, [I guess actors have to eat too eh?].
