Goblet of Fire Fan Reviews

Bearing in mind that a lot of reviewers summarize the film and forget to actually review it, I will refrain from rehashing each and every scene. To be short, if you are expecting to see an accurate cinematic portrayal of the book, you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you are willing to see someone's interpretation based on the book, you may be pleasantly suprised.

PLOT: Almost all of the subplots in the book have been eliminated. The movie focuses sharply on the Triwizard tournament, and any subplot is mainly on Harry's relationships with his friends, fellow students, and some Hogwarts staff members. The story moves extremely quickly, so much so that I left the theatre wanting to see it again just in case I missed something.

CHARACTERS: Hermione is noticeably more 'motherly' in some scenes. All three main characters are more independent and comfortable in their relationships with each other - so much so that at times they take each other for granted and resentment boils between them. Mad-Eye Moody's personality is exactly like I imagined, though I expected him to look even wilder and more broken than he was portrayed. Snape is barely present, though performed as accurately as ever. The new characters have far more screen time than the standard Hogwarts staff members and they are missed.

ACTING: The adults are superb as always, though Dumbledore seems very angry most of the time - I am assuming that was intentional. The kids (well, young adult actors) improve with each film and this is the best one yet as far as emotional range and expressive acting. Katie Leung did a great job and I could not tell this was her first experience in a film. SPECIAL FX, Scenery, background: Far better than in the previous films, it's much harder to detect the cg scenes in this one. I'm glad they kept the same outdoorsy feel of POA, even without getting to visit Hagrid's hut in this film. The interior of the lake was absolutely beautiful in an eerie way.

MUSIC: Haunting, as always, the theme has been altered to suit the different mood of this film. It is like the next verse of an ongoing song. Additional Comments: The directing of this film seems to far outweigh those of the previous two, however, I have to consider that the actors have matured  and gained some more experience as well. This movie felt like a roller coaster ride through a not-so-frightening haunted house at an amusement park. I kept anticipating a big "BOO!" that never came. The ride was so fast that I didn't get to see all the interesting things along the way. The conclusion didn't leave me wanting more....it just made me long for my book instead. Overall, I liked this film more than I expected to, but it moved just a little too fast for me. 4 out of 5 stars.
