Goblet of Fire Media Reviews

Hartford Advocate

Rating: 4.5/5

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth time around for the films based on J.K. Rowling's unstoppable series. The stakes are raised when the 14-year-old Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is magically chosen to participate in a potentially lethal tournament intended for students aged 17 and up. Meanwhile Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) makes plans to reconstitute his corporeal form, and you know that can't be good.

Mike Newell ( Four Weddings and a Funeral , Enchanted April ) assumes directorial duties on this darker, more mature episode. Some may wonder how that's possible, given the tone set by Alfonso Cuaron's splendid previous entry, but it's all in keeping with Ms. Rowling's long-range vision. As Harry and his chums (Emma Watson, Rupert Grint) grow older and hopefully wiser, the stakes get higher and the risks of playing with sorcery become that much riskier. Terrific new roles are assigned to Brendan Gleeson and Miranda Richardson as, respectively, a menacing instructor with a (literally) wandering eye and a gossipmonger for the wizard world's daily rag. The Potter oeuvre remains imaginative stuff that whisks a viewer effortlessly along. Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane are among the returning Hogwarts faculty, and while each has his or her brief moments in the spotlight, the focus remains squarely on Harry and his efforts to stay a reasonable, regular lad despite the burden of being born with unique abilities.

Think of the extraordinary adolescence Radcliffe, Watson and Grint are having as the living repositories of this fantastic legacy. Keep 'em coming; we're ready and waiting.

"Well... when we were in our first year, Harry — young, care-free, and innocent —" Harry snorted. He doubted Fred and George had ever been innocent.
