Goblet of Fire Fan Reviews

Commendable and Memorable

STORY: B Considering how detailed the book is, Steve Kloves did a great job of cutting it down. The one HUGE flaw was the interpretation of Dumbledore. I was heartbroken to see him shouting at Harry, yelling to get people's attention, completely wrong-footed by the developments throughout the Tournament. He didn't represent J.K. Rowling's competent Headmaster. It was important that Harry see how much Dumbledore stood behind him. As a reviewer on Yahoo said, Dumbledore's treatment of Harry in books 1-4 was why Harry could describe himself as "Dumbledore's man through and through" in Half-Blood Prince. The other plot line I missed was Sirius's bit. He will have to be a much larger character in 5 for us to fully sympathize with his death. I can see why S.P.E.W., Ludo Bagman, and even Rita Skeeter's Animagus transformation had to go. I miss them, but the movie works well as it is.

ACTING: A The trio just gets better and better. I think they had a more solid script to work with this time around, but Dan, Emma, and Rupert made it come alive. Alan Rickman as Snape -- WONDERFUL. Roger Lloyd-Pack (Barty Crouch Sr.) also did some good work. I didn't like what the makeup artists did with him -- he didn't look quite as stern as I pictured the character -- but that really didn't affect his performance in the long run.

DIRECTION: A- Newell did a spectacular job. He brought out the best in the trio and masterfully weaved plot lines together (again, kudos to Kloves). He must have had a vision going into this to make the movie flow as well as it did. (Some people have complained about choppy transitions, but I didn't see any major problems.) I'm sure he had a hand in Dumbledore's characterization, but most of the blame for that lies with Kloves.

VISUALS: A+ Better than ever. The CGI dragon chasing Harry was a definite highlight, even if it lasted a bit longer than necessary. (You can tell boys were in charge of this movie!) Also, I loved the Yule Ball. Whoever was in charge of that set did a spectacular job. The filming was excellent too. Great work.

OVERALL: A- I enjoyed this movie a lot, which is more than I can say for most of the previous ones. Because I was ready for some major deviations from the book, it usually didn't bother me very much when they came up. On the whole, I think most fans of the book can appreciate aspects of this movie, even if they can't accept all of the changes. For the most part, character development is great. The plot suffered in places, but it came together in the end. Wish the film hadn't been quite so rushed, but...that's the price you pay in Hollywood.

Everybody finished the song at different times. At last, only the Weasley twins were left singing along to a very slow funeral march.
