Goblet of Fire Fan Reviews

By Nora

Before I begin my review, I would like to clarify that I have nothing against Warner Bros., Mike Newell or the actors of this movie. Alright, now we can start. If you have not seen the movie, have not read the book and have no clue whatsoever of what happen in both, I suggest you read Carrie's review first because she neatly and accurately summarized the movie in the review. I'm just going to go with the review. This movie is, in my opinion, the best of the four movies by far. But on a scale of one to ten, I'd give it a six. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's a great movie.

If it was any ordinary movie, I'd give it an eight. But it's not just any ordinary movie. It's an adaptation of J.K. Rowling's great work. And because it lacks so many things from the book, I deducted a few marks. Let me start with the positive points first. The special effects were excellent, and the acting was much better than the last movie. This movie also, ironically, has much more humour than the past movies although it's supposed to be the darkest one. You also feel all the emotions while watching the movie. Anger at Ron for being such a jerk. Afraid that Harry might not get past the dragon (although if you've read the book you should know he would). Disappointed that Harry didn't get to go to the ball with Cho. Happy for Hermione because someone finally noticed she was a girl. The movie is like one roller coaster ride of emotions. The best thing was Cedric's final request to Harry, and when Harry brought Cedric's body back to Hogwarts. I truthfully admit that I cried during that scene. Then again, I'm sure a lot of you did.

Ok, now onto the negatives. Firstly I think the plot editing was a bit overdone. Ok, a lot overdone. The Crouch Jr. mystery was all gone by putting him in the first scene with Voldemort and Wormtail. They didn't show the QWC, but I don't think that matters much. They cut out the S.P.E.W subplot which I think shouldn't be because it's one of the central theme in Harry Potter; mistreatment of inferior beings. I only hope they bring out Kreacher in OOTP. They took out more than half of the book, now that I think about it, and added a few unnecessary scenes, but it worked out quite well despite the fact that it annoyed the hell out of book fans. The thing that bothers me most is the out of character characters. Dumbledore, being the major one, Barty Crouch Sr., Fluer, and Krum are the ones I've managed to track down. I think everyone has the same grumbles about Michael Gambon, so I'll spare him this time.

Crouch Sr., in my opinion, was out of character because 1) he's supposed to be under the Imperius Curse. If he wasn't, it would mean they changed the story of how Crouch Jr. got out of Azkaban (which we wouldn't know, by the way, because they didn't put it in). 2) After the second task when he pulls Harry aside, I think it's a bit out of character of him to have a what would have been considered frivolous talk with Harry. He's supposed be a stick-by-the-book kind of person. Fleur Delecour, is supposed to be a snotty, conceited, self-centered kind of girl. The movie, however, doesn't show that. It is also my prediction that Fluer and Bill getting engaged in the sixth book will not be in the movie when they make it.

Krum is grouchy, anti-social and surly, as described in the book. The movie portrayed Krum as a guy popular with his peers, free with his emotions and well, not anti-social at all. I know these are petty things, but it would really irritate a ‘book fan through and through' (like me). Those are the major things that I think should be mentioned, but there are other things which are pretty minor that I still haven't analysed. But I'm sure if I've left anything important, other reviews would cover it.

My advice is, if you're a diehard book fan and is not open to a different version of the GOF, don't watch this movie. It'll rile you up for a whole week.
