Goblet of Fire Fan Reviews
By Todd
As time flies by and each movie comes to pass we see differnt directors take the helm of such a wonderful series. Each and everyone has brought their point of veiw of how the world is shaped. Mike Newell, the first Brit to helm the series, has brought the series to life. Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets seemed like it tried to hard to capture the magic of the wizarding world. Prisoner of Azkaban was more serrious and gave the series the magical revival it needed. Goblet of Fire is a step above the last three, but has some flaws. It adds a touch of human to the characters as they struggle through those difficult teenage years.
Die hard Potter fans will have mixed reactions as usual. With the movie lasting only two and a half hours it seems like only a second within the Potter universe, although you have to realize that if nothing was cut we would have a thirteen hour movie. Some probably would sit through that but some would probably get bored after a while, but i am waiting for that three or four hour movie. All the cuts from the book in order to make a movie are very prevelent as always, but with the way GOF was played out, they did a nice job. The only disappointment with the movie is listed as follows: Dobby, the Dursleys, the scene between sirius dumbledore and harry in the office after the maze, and the argument between Fudge and dumbledore. The only thing I worry about is how are they going to form a connection between Harry and Sirius even more, and how they are going to connect the plots of OOTP with the ministrie's disagreement with Harry and Dumbledore. They sort of mention it in the end when at the end of year ceremony. All in all I think that Steve Kloves has done a good job plot wise with the movies.
Characters are well played as we see Dan, Emma, and Rupert evolve into good actors. Sometimes its not only what they say that adds to the movie but also what they don't say. From the disagreement between Ron and harryu to the Yule Ball fiasco, they add a touch of what we remember being a teenager or what some are going through right now. We can connect with the Harry Ron and Hermione, which is so great about the movies as well as the books. Each seems to follow JK's vision, which is more than I can say about dumbledore. In GOF Dumbledore seems to be angry at sometimes and often very eerie at some times. In defense of the movie though at the end of the book, dumbledore seems a little more tired than usual, seems to be getting older. Snape as usual is suspect of being evil, Mad Eye Moody is crazy as ever, McGonagall is stern, and Flitwick is funny as always but there. With the addition of Karkaroff and Madame Maxime are both well played. We are set from the arrival of the two schools that Karkaroff is evil, because we see him slip into the Great Hall slyly as everyone seems to be asleep. Madame Maxime is huge and in love with Hagrid. The three champions are there, but we don't hear a lot of dialoge from them, maybe one or two lines. Finally there is the addition of He-who-must-not-be-named. Voldemort! His ressurection is well done, from the incantion by Wormtail to Priori Incantatem. Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort is wonderfully done, a bit sinister and evil. His taunting of Harry is perfect. Rita Skeeter is along the same lines but we don't see much of her after the first task.
Over all the movie is well done with what they have to work with. The PG-13 ratting is there for a reason. And with that rating it probably gained more interest. I say go and see the movie, even if you have read the book. With all of the plot that was cut out as usual it still had that magical touch. for the future as I had stated before I'm worried about how they are going to tie the next movie into this. With Steve kloves being gone, i worry about a change in style of how the story is told, because they are different people, and have different points of view. In the past though change has been good.
