MuggleCast #69 Roundup! Posted on 28 Dec 2006 by Micah
We've received hundreds of e-mails in response to last week's show. Our first comes from Pastor Joey Lyons, 31, of Christiansburg, Virginia. His initial comments concern religion and the Harry Potter series:
I am a Christian and a pastor and I see no reason that a believer cannot like, read or watch Harry Potter. As matter of fact, I have used Harry Potter movie clips and/or book quotes to illustrate sermons and messages before and cannot wait for Order of the Phoenix to be available to use!
He then goes on to comment on Jo's title for Book Seven:
Being a pastor, I cannot help but to respond to the title for Book Seven, since it contains the word "hallows," a promient word in my line of work. It would seem that "deathly" and "hallows" are strange words to use together from my perspective, and would give the book a negative overtone throughout. I would contend, however, that "death" and "holy" could possibly suggest a Christ-like sacrifice by one of the main characters (Harry, more than likely). I understand that the Christ-like sacrifice idea may be a stretch, but with no clarity as to if "hallows" is a noun, verb or other part of speech, it could be an interesting foreshadowing.
Troy Thomas, 15, of Baltimore, Maryland believes things to be a bit more simplistic:
I believe that Deathly Hallows is far simpler and far more complicated all at the same time than it apears to be. In a way Deathly Hallows is simply just a synonym for Horcruxes....only Deathly Hallows sounds much better. Jo particularly said that Book Six and Seven were were merely part one and part two of the final part of the Harry Potter series.
As far as release dates go Julian Bennett Holmes, 15, of New York says that we should pay attention to historical precedent:
Every single Harry Potter book ever has been released in summer.
Fair point, Julian. Fair point. However, with that said, because of other popular theories, let's do a solstice check:
Summer Solstice: Thursday, June 21, 2007 Winter Solstice: Friday, December 21, 2007
Other popular dates have included July 31, 2007, both Harry and Jo's birthday, as well as December 31, 2007, Tom Riddle's birthday.
I am still sticking by October 31, 2007! We will all know soon enough. See you all on Sunday for Episode 70, when we reflect on the past year in Potter!
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house... Posted on 24 Dec 2006 by Jamie
...not a creature was stirring, except for the mice, because let's face it, due to the non-sentient nature of mice as a species, we can't expect them to acknowledge the fairytale delusions of humans, can we?! Incidentally, we've spoken to Santa - don't worry about not eating your greens this Christmas. You'll still get your gifts. However, if you don't listen to MuggleCast, expect an empty stocking, my friends. :( A very Merry Christmas to you from all of us at here at MuggleCast! Have a great day! :) - Ben and Hermione- Laura and Neville- Eric and Snape- Jamie and Lupin- Micah, Dumbledore, and Dobby- Andrew and KevinThanks to Kelly Egan for the great artwork!

Episode #68 Roundup! Posted on 20 Dec 2006 by Laura
We begin this week's roundup with an interesting observation from Lacey of Arkansas: During many times throughout history, including medieval times, people who were thought to practice any type of witchcraft were persecuted and often put to death. Perhaps because of the negative perception of witches and wizards and having to stay in hiding, Slytherin saw muggleborns/halfbloods as possibly untrustworthy and dangerous if taught magic. Simon of London elaborated on the subject by providing us a more detailed account of medieval Europe, and drawing a connection between the current (secret) alliance the Ministry of Magic holds with the Muggle Prime Minister: The 900s to 1000AD was the era of castle building (what with 1066 and all that) so I think it plausible that the four founders were (secretly! ) sponsored by royalty, probably by helping the monarchy of the day in various magical ways (maybe dragon removal) for which they may have received the initial Hogwarts castle as payment. They then subsequently wrapped it in magical enchantments to provide the foundation upon which to organise their school. Kris of Tennessee writes in with his thoughts on the "personality" of Hogwarts discussed on the show this week: Even old houses have an almost personality and a feeling all their own. Many cultures attribute buildings with gaining sort of spirits of their own in a way depending on the emotional attachments people have to it. Hogwarts being so old with so many emotional attachments would have a decently personified consciousness. Also, thanks to everyone who wrote in with birthday wishes over the previous week and yesterday - it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy... I love you all! I should also note that (as Micah mentioned) Jo updated her site yesterday - another coincidence? I think not! I hope you're all enjoying this holiday season! Love, Laura PS. I know none of you are actually done gift shopping yet... Why not get your Mom that MuggleCast t-shirt she's been wanting? There's love in every stitch...!
Happy Birthday Laura! Posted on 19 Dec 2006 by Andrew
The greatest female co-host of MuggleCast turns 18 today! We can't thank her enough for all of the hard work she puts into the show week to week, and we know the listeners are very appreciative of her female prespective on the discussion topics (which she never fails to provide). Enjoy your 18th birthday, Laura! As a present for Laura, I (Micah) posted the transcript for Episode 67.
