MuggleCast #60 Roundup! Posted on 27 Oct 2006 by Andrew
Good evening, MuggleDorks! Your trusty host here with some listener feedback on episode 60. Two things to mention though before we get to that:
1) Sorry for no Roundup on #59! The week sorta snuck by without anyone getting a chance to create a post. We'll try to avoid that in the future.
2) I'd like to direct everyone's attention to the debate poll on the right side of this page. You'll notice Laura and I are leading Eric in the audience vote with a 55/44 split. Unfortunately, this doesn't officially make Laura and I the winner. However, I am a man of my word, and I'll still stick with my promise of $10 to each of you who voted for us. Just don't tell Ben or Eric.
Let's get to the feedback from last week's show! Sandhya, 16, of Michigan writes in response to our discussion of the love room: "Maybe the purpose of this love room is not to actually contain love but merely to study the effects of it," she writes, "we must remember that the people we are dealing with here all have magic. There are auras and powers, a supernatural presence of sorts, within each wizard or witch that must change as the children get older and mature. That’s why they go to Hogwarts, their education allows them to focus their magic. The love room then could actually be a way for department of mysteries personnel to then study the effects of love on both people and their magic."
We received another e-mail from Lillian, 13, of Texas. She thinks that the Ministry of Magic uses some reverse-psychology on visitors to make sure they don't enter: "It is kind of similar (vaguely) to how you always knock on a bathroom door before you open it. People expect it to be locked or to have someone in it, so they don't just waltz in. The thing is, people would expect the door to be locked or guarded, so they wouldn't just go on in."
Eric, 26, of Houston, Texas e-mailed in about our debate on underage wizardry: "The problem with the whole Ban on Underage Magic is that it is biased. The only way that the Ministry can tell if an underage wizard has done magic is if they are in a non-magical house. If an underage which or wizard does magic in a public magical place (ie Diagon Alley) the Ministry can't tell who does it. If an underage wizard does magic in his house (where his/her parents are also magical) the ministry can't tell who performed the magic. But, if an underage wizard does magic in his/her house (where the parents are non-magical) he/she will get in trouble."
You'll hear a few more rebuttals on Episode 61 of MuggleCast, which is scheduled for a spoOoOoOoOky release this weekend!
Andrew on the tube Posted on 25 Oct 2006 by Ben
A local TV station in New Jersey did a feature on Andrew and now the clip has surfaced on YouTube. The video aired quite a while ago, but I thought you all might want to see it. It's also fun to embarass Andrew. Let him know how awesome you think the video is by selecting his name from the contact form on this page.
My iPod crashes whenever I listen to MuggleCast! Posted on 18 Oct 2006 by Andrew
It's a complaint that we've been receiving from lots of you over the past few weeks since Apple released their latest iPod firmware upgrade (version 1.2). Several listeners have e-mailed us with suggestions on how to fix the problem, but we're going to recommend Apple's official response:
On your iPod, go to Settings (accessible from the main menu of your iPod) and click on EQ. Change the EQ mode to Off and try listening to the podcast again. Apparently the issue only exists with podcasts that are encoded on a mono channel. Hopefully Apple will fix this with their next firmware update, but for now...this is the way to fix it!
Episode 58 Transcript Posted on 17 Oct 2006 by Micah
The transcript for Episode 58 has now been posted. We should have Episode 57 (The Lost Episode) and Episode 59 to you by this weekend.
MuggleCast #57: This Show Is Outdated Posted on 14 Oct 2006 by Andrew
Put down the pitch forks and take away the skepticism... MuggleCast #57 is now online! Be warned though: It has its audio problems. Especially towards the end of the show you'll see why it had to be delayed. You can directly download it right here, or visit the episodes page for show notes and more. You can also update your iTunes feed to get the new show. Episode 59 is still on schedule to be released this Sunday.

Comments on our blog have been turned on...sorry for the delay! We hope everyone uses the comment system to give us their thoughts on what we're doing with the podcast.
EDIT: So we lied. The comments aren't actually working yet. We're working on fixing it!
MuggleCast #58 Roundup! Posted on 09 Oct 2006 by Laura
In celebration of this spiffy new website, we're taking advantage of our blogging feature to present the new weekly roundup! Following each show's release, one of us will post in regards to the listener feedback sent in by all you lovely pickle people. We think #58 is the perfect episode to premiere this new feature with due to the high volume of comments and rebuttals we've gotten surrounding the veil, so let's get to it!
One of the questions left unresolved in this week's show was the common link shared between Harry, Luna, Neville, and Ginny that would allow for them all to hear the voices beyond the veil. Michelle from New York suggests that witnessing death is not necessarily a factor when being entranced by the veil, but that having a traumatic experience is: Harry has battled many times with Voldemort, Luna witnessed her mother's death, Neville lived through his parents' torture, and Ginny was possessed by Tom Riddle. However, Allyson of New Jersey thinks that death is a factor, and suggests that Ginny's experience with Riddle was near-death enough to warrant her hearing the whispers. She also believes the attraction between the children and the veil is the same type of draw a dying person feels to "let go", and that since these four have had more experiences with death, they would be more vulnerable to the veil's, er... "charm". Nice theories, thank you ladies!
In addition, Ola from Connecticut theorizes that the veil might be one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, and Jacquie of Michigan suggests a "circle of life" type scenario where the veil is the source of all magic in the world, and when someone (or something) goes through it, they become part of that magic.
We certainly appreciate all of the wonderful listener feedback we get, so if you think you have a great theory, answer to one of our questions, or you'd like to e-smack us for getting something wrong, please write to mugglecast at staff dot mugglenet dot com. Who knows... maybe you'll see your name and thoughts on this page next week!
So long!
