dani-As they have The Aviator and Kinsey on the list, I'd say the authors of the list were able to see the list before hand. The Aviator isn't scheduled for release till the end of the year. By the by, yeah for PoA! I enjoyed it very much. I think Curan's direction went well with the theme of the books.

yeah there have been many sequels this year. By the way are these films that have been out in uk only or nationwide? cause the sequel oceons 12 (example) isn't out in uk till feb. but it is already out in the us, so would it have been included in the top ten?
|
|
| posted by: danni | 12/12 |
If the films stood alone, there were no books behind them just wb films, then they would be so bad. The only reason alot of people like them is because they are to do with jk's world of harry potter. The films themselves leave out alot of extra information, those being the essence of the books that make them successful.

danni--It must be the us only.Nationwide it's a bit difficult because a film is released at different times for example PoA in Greece was released september while in Britain it was released may or june!

I really don't think the movie deserved to be on a list of good movies because it cut out so much and it was sort of confusing. Too bad the fourth one's gonna be only 8 minutes longer
|
|
| posted by: HPfan | 12/12 |
Interesting take Danni. I was gonna post something to the opposite, but you do make sense. I mean as a story, the movie is somewhat lacking and most critics judged the movies as a theatrical intepretation of the story in the novels instead of as a story in and of itself. But that's probably just an advantage (sometimes disadvantage) that all book based movies have. Still, the movie had a lot more going for it than just the story (IMO actually the weakest aspect of it): the visuals, the characteriztions, and so forth.
Bottom line: I think PoA is very deserving of the Top 10 consideration.

ok that was just stupid! who the hell was judging that anyway? i mean i haven't even heard of half of those films, some of them haven't even come out yet, and poa didn't deserve (don't start bashing me!) to be in the top 10.

I think it's pathetic that people think it deserves number 1. Personally, it was okay, and 9 is right at it's place. But Number one? The place goes to good movies like Spider Man 2, Shrek 2, etc. NOT HP3. Seriously, why would they award them number 1 when some actors are... well... BAD, and the movie is fast-paced, confusing for non-HP readers, etc?
|
|
| posted by: rila | 12/12 |
I totally agree with rila! People who think it should be number 1 just like HP so much they don't care how bad the movie is, it's HP so it's the best. Grow up, take off your HP craze for a moment and watch the film. Number 16 at it's highest.

btw, i know we're all really big hp fans, and so am i, but i think POA is exactly where its supposed to be (9) cuz i think it was a really good movie, but it had a lotta really cheezy parts, and plus, they totally changed some of the characters in a not so good way *cough cough hermione* i dont agree w/ the other 9 but thats prolly cuz i havent seen them, i bet they were great movies too

Its great that HP POA got #9. Shrek 2 and Spiderman 2 weren't even on the list so it wasn't going by how much the films earned, and the Aviator isn't even out yet and they are already talking about an Oscar for that. All those other films are deep drama type movies. Just shows how deep POA actually was if your mind is mature enough to see it. POA ROCKS!!!!

Ok Parna, so i guess you think your smarter then the people who created this list? I highly doubt that they are crazed Harry Potter fans. Personally, I think POA greatly deserves to be on this list, and you have no right to tell the many fans, critics and movie-goers that agree with me to "grow up".
|
|
| posted by: mike | 12/12 |
I do what I please, mike. I don't think I'm smarter than them at all, so you guessed wrong. This list, by the way, is not made solely by them. Fans had their say in this. Sure, PoA was good. But you should have the decency to admit that it was not the best movie of the year, unlike what people said. Either way, this list is at its worst. Movies that aren't even out yet, movies nobody ever heard of, etc. Anyone could admit it.

Hey, I don't think POA was the best film of the year. I do however think it was a great movie, easily one of the top 10 of the year. It belongs on this list. I also believe that if someone think POA WAS the best movie of the year, that they have a valid opinion. I can certainly see why they might say this.
The list is not at its worst. Just because you haven't heard of some of these movies, doesn't mean nobody has.

I personally think #9 is ok for this movie, maybe #8, but no higher. It wasn't the year's best one, but it was very well made. And contrary to popular belief, books and movie are different media, so yes, they judged the movie based on it's quality (effects, acting, takes, direction, etc.) not on "how close it stayed to the books". I know it's not fair for us HP readers, but thinking about it that way makes just a bit more torelable. ;)

That's a pretty respectable ranking, considering that almost 7/10 of the list is made up of limited release indie dramas. I'm pleased because PoA managed to make the Top 10 while other movies I thought would be a given didn't seem to make it (The Incredibles comes to mind for me). Also, people shouldn't take this list so seriously. It's just a group of people at Newsweek's opinion. It's not like it's "The" list. Come to think of it, people shouldn't infatuate themselves so much with the opinions of critics. Just because their opinion is in print doesn't mean it's the only one worthy of remembrance.

Many of these movies weren't made for the same target audience as PoA, so it's no small wonder why you wouldn't have heard of them. The lot of the movies at the top are arthouse movies and/or movies for adult audiences: Bad Education, for example, had an NC-17 rating.
I don't know how this list was compiled, but I'm guessing it was from critics' appraisals of movies. I always found it ironic that so many fans hated this movie while critics (and JK Rowling herself) loved. Everybody is duely entitled to their opinion, of course and nothing is going to please everybody, but I still found it interesting.

I'm glad POA made it on this list, I mean, not any movie makes it, especially comercial movies. From the list, POA was the biggest box office hit here (Let's wait for Aviator, is it going to be another Titanic-hit?)! Well, I think it should be at least in #7, not 9, it was better than the remake of the Manchurian Candidate and way better than Friday Night Lights, but oh well! Many of you don't look at the movie from a good point of view, you pepole (Who complain that the movie was not good because it didn't follow the story page by page) are the people who think movies like: American Pie, Not Another Teen Movie, Scary Movie, The Hot Chick, Sorority Boys etc... should deserve an Oscar or be projected in Cannes! This was a FILM not a Movie, the director did such an artistic work with it that it is very har for you people and Chris Columbus to understand. I think most of the movies on that list are great: Bad Education (La Mala Educacion, by Pedro Almodovar, really good movie and Gael Garcia is great and everything is perfect, watch it with an open mind), Osama (Great movie), Before Sunset and I am sure the Aviator will also be great after seeing leonardo in excelent roles! Stop watching Hollywoodesq movies and go watch Indie films, which are far superior than the Hollywood junk, especially watch European movies, great options to choose from! i regret The Motorcycle Diaries (Diarios de Motocicleta, also with Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal as El Che Guevara)is not on the list, I would of put it on #10! Ciao everyone, and Happy Christmas!

Thank you Amy, I mean, POA was so artistic and it was such a beautiful movie, with excelent scenes (the Buckbeak ride through the castle and castle grounds, my God it was so gorgeous, I thought this was not even a comercial movie). The story is excelent, the surprises (For non POA readers) where great and adecuate. I mean, I went with some people that did not read the books and did not go see COS after watching PS/SS because they thought it was such a horrible movie, but when they heard Cuaron was directing, they gave it a chance and loved the movie, some even watched more than 2 times, I wached it 6 times, 4 in the US and 2 times in Mexico. They where glad the books got justice on Film with a great director! I'm glad WB signed a contract for Alfonso Cuaron for 3 years (He is now directing a movie about the student riots in Mexico of the year 1968, a year that hit the Western World badly, like Mexico City, Paris, Prague etc..., it is like The Dreamers by Bertolucci, excelent film, also student riots in Paris). I hope the HP4 director takes it from there and makes more masterpieces and not crud like Chirs Columbus did with the first 2 movies!

The movie sucked! It had nothing of the story in it. I can undrstand how people who havent read the books could think it was ok, but you should know better! I am ashamed! SELL OUTS!! Sorry, I should stop typing before I say something I might regret. I do get too upset over something so stupid as a movie that is not worth crap.

what some people don't understand is that the movie and the books are two completely different things. You can't view them separately, unfortunately, and you get dissapointed. It's like saying that the HP games are totally different from the books, when they are completly separate medias! Plus, the movies are "based" on the books, meaning, they can take as little as only the characters and the name and make up a completely different story if the want to and it would still be ok because they're based on the book, they're not THE books. ;) and don't be sorry, everyone's entitled to tehir opinion. :)

"Those other movies on the list must not be that good because I've never heard of them before"
Mia, I think your comment shows a bit of ignorance. Obviously, the movies that attempt to tackle deeper, more profound issues about the human condition aren't going to cater to the typical audience of moviegoers who just want a good time. Because you haven't heard of a movie doesn't say anything about its worth. What is all this riot about Spiderman 2? It was shallow, focused on special effects, with really a comic-book storyline, which glorifies the hero and villanizes the villain, no surprises, no innovation.
Anyway, I thought Azkaban was well-done, and the "die-hard" fans must keep in mind that it is possible to preserve the spirit of the movies and take liberties with interpretation. The movie remains, without any doubt, entirely Harry Potter-esque, and entirely his world.
(Yeah Before Sunset! I LOVED the end, too ^_^)
