Potter Profile - Alison and Addie

June 12, 2005

What is your favorite Harry Potter book and why?
We both like POA the best - it's got a really cool plot with the time travel angle. Also, to parrot Jo in one of her interviews, it introduces some nifty characters, namely Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. And who wouldn't want a Marauder's Map of their school or work or someplace else of interest?

Did you like the third movie or not and why?
Yes, we both liked it - in fact, like the movies, it was our favorite of the three so far. Addie really likes the time-travel sequence. Alison does too, and likes the fact that the young actors have developed to the point where they seem more natural. Also, it was, even in the books, a more developed continuous plot and less like a series of connected vignettes. Combining the development of the acting trio and the plot gives a fluidity to the movie that wasn't quite there in the first two.

If you could spend the day as one character from the books, who would it be?
Addie would definitely be Hermione Granger because she's so smart! Alison's really having trouble on this one - it's an age thing - in real life too old to be a Hogwarts student but not as old as any of the professors. But, it would probably have to be Minerva McGonagall. (Alison generally considers herself sorted into Ravenclaw, however.)

What do you think of all this "relationship" arguments about who will end up with who, etc.?
At age 7, Addie doesn't have much interest in this one. Alison is just generally amused by it all and looks forward to finding out Jo's opinion in the final two books.

What is your favorite moment of the series so far?
Addie is particularly fond of Harry's defeat of the Basilisk - she likes the classic good defeats bad aspect - and with a cool sword to boot. Alison loves many parts, but has always had a notable fondness for the moment at the end of PS/SS when Dumbledore bites into an earwax-flavored Bertie Bott's bean. Makes her laugh every time.

Who do you think the Half-Blood prince is?
Alison thinks Hagrid is a slight possibility based on the fact that HBP was the original title for COA and there was that part about Hagrid getting thrown out of Hogwarts in COA. It seemed like something that could easily have been expanded but was it wasn't - perhaps that was the information Jo took out? But that's the only thing we've come up with - if that's not it, we have to agree with a previous fan of the week who said it would probably be someone we've seen before but wouldn't think of - until we're told, and then it makes perfect sense.

Do you have anything else you'd like to add? Maybe a theory you've concocted, a shout-out?
Well, apparently Alison has come up with a theory about the HBP even though she didn't realize it when she first started answering these questions. Other than that - thanks to Addie's grandmother (Alison's mom) for agreeing to go with us this summer when we go on our Harry Potter Scotland fan trip, since Addie's dad/Alison's husband can't go due to work commitments. Addie wants to thank her piano teacher Mary for letting her start to work on songs from the POA "late elementary piano solos" book. Also thanks to Mugglenet for picking us, and for having such good content all the time. And finally, Alison wants to thank Jo for her creativity and imagination which has sparked the imagination of Addie and millions of other children around the world!

Quotes
I still don't like your tone, boy. If you can speak of your beatings in that casual way, they clearly aren't hitting you hard enough. Petunia, I'd write if I were you. Make it clear that you approve the use of extreme force in this boy's case.
