Potter Profile - Debangana

April 26, 2009

First off, how did you become a Harry Potter fan?
Honestly speaking, I hadn't read the books or liked them because they looked so boring. My brother used to read them and he liked them very, very much. Once or twice I tried to read the first book, because there was so much hype surrounding it & naturally I got curious but couldn't go beyond two pages. Dead boring!! But when I was 13, I had got a school project in which I had to write the review of two books. So I randomly picked up Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from my bookshelf to do some light reading so as to be able to write the review. And that was THE magic moment when I entered the world of Harry Potter and I have still not able to come out of it (& I don't want to either!!).

How are you feeling now that the series is over?
I feel that a book like Harry Potter can never come to an end. It’ll always be alive in the hearts of its numerous fans.

In Chapter 1 of HBP, the Muggle Prime Minister is told about the existence of the Wizarding World. How do you think you would react to news of a magic world?
Well… who wouldn’t like the idea of a magical world?! Only the existence of Giants, Vampires, Zombies and all would freak me out!

Before being told who the Half-Blood Prince was, what did you think about the title?
The word “Prince” evoked an image of some magical dynasty whose heir was to help Harry defeat Voldemort, that’s what I thought at first. I was excited about the introduction of a new character, but then the truth kind of disappointed me.

Draco is pressured to follow in his parents footsteps. Do you think that he truly believes in the way of the Death Eaters or has he simply been influenced by his upbringing?
Draco definitely has been influenced by his upbringing. He was mean and a sort of a bully, but I don’t think he really believed in the way of the Death Eaters. He just wanted to lead a normal life but was scared into taking the wrong path by Voldemort.

From the trailers we have seen thus far, it seems as though the movie won't focus too much on Harry's Potions Book. How do you think the lack of "Half-Blood Prince" scenes will hurt the movie?
Of course that’ll hurt the movie! How can you not show what the book is based on?! This is ridiculous!

What about the exclusion of The Gaunts and Voldemort's past? Bill & Fleur? Dumbledore's Funeral?
The Gaunts should not have been excluded. I would have liked to see Voldemort’s mum and dad. About Voldemort’s past being excluded, I dunno… there’s a young Tom Riddle and a teenage one in the cast… and there are pictures showing the young Tom Riddle too… But if they are excluded it will really take the essence out of the movie. About Bill, well, we never really got to see Bill and Charlie! And about Dumbledore’s Funeral, I don’t think it’ll hurt the movie much.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Harry Potter’s a masterpiece. It’s just beyond this world! There never existed such a book and there never will exist either.

Quotes
I tell you, that dragon's the most horrible animal I've ever met, but the way Hagrid goes on about it, you'd think it was a fluffly little bunny rabbit. When it bit me, he told me off for frightening it. And when I left, he was singing it a lullaby.
