Potter Profile - David

September 21, 2003

Harry Potter always has been, and always will be my favorite fictional character ever to be dreamt up by an author. The books have always been there for me whenever my friends have not, and have always been there for me to read in times of unhappiness or sadness. For this, I am thankful.

I don't have that much Harry Potter merchandise. I of course own all five of the books, as well as the Harry Potter quiz book, the 2 dvd's, the reading lamp, the bookmark and one of the games. I am also going to be purchasing, in the near future, Harry Potter signed autographs to frame in my bedroom. My computer is covered with Harry Potter wallpaper, screensavers, websites saved in my favorite places, etc. The only trouble I'm having is finding a Harry Potter desktop. :(

Because of my love for the Harry potter series, I've tried to get alot of people to read the books. I have suceeded in getting a few of my friends, my brother and my mum to read them. My brother at the beginning blatantly refused to read them. And then December 1st 2001 arrived, and my family and I got in the car and went to see the 8.15 showing of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He loved it, but it would still take another 8 months for him to read them. He fineshed all four books in 5 days! And he has now read book 5 as well!

How and when did you get in to Harry Potter?
In October 1998, the Harry Potter books began to get recognition among the book world. Although I was only ten years old, I was a real book worm. I had read most of the children's series out there and I happened to hear about the two Harry Potter books that had been published and were becoming a real sucess.

So I went down to the local library, and they only had book 2 in. Although I would rather have read book 1 first, I was still happy to be reading book 2. In any case I could still read the book without having to read book 1 first. It was a 'stand alone' book, which sat in the middle of a series!

Once I'd finished that book, I went back to the library and got book 1. Not long after I'd finished reading that book, book 3 was released. That was by far the best out of the three books which I'd read. Then came book 4, and now book 5 after three long years! I have to say though, J.K. Rowling has NOT lost her touch. With each book she brings out, her writing just gets better and better!

Which Harry Potter book is your favorite?
For a long time, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was my favorite, closely followed by Prisoner of Azkaban. Now, I have two favorites - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I didn't really like Order of the Phoenix when it was released because I didn't feel as if we'd learnt anything, but then I realised; I had been searching the internet for two years before the release of Phoenix, and I had read literally thousands of rumours. This gave me very high expectations and of course not many rumours came true! I re-read book 5 a few days later and absolutely loved it and now it's co-favorite!

What character can you relate to most?
I can relate to Hermione Granger because she is very clever. She is sometimes seen as a 'swot' or a 'geek' just because she is intelligent. People can sometimes get jealous and try and ridicule those who are more intelligent than themselves.

Ron Weasley is my favorite character, both in the books and the films. In the film, Rupert Grint is brilliant as Ron. Ron sometimes gets angry like I do and he is very lazy in school like I am. I think that we'd both rather have a snooze on the desk rather than actually do some work!

Are you satisfied with the handling of the "boy/girl stuff" in book 5?
I thought that there would be alot more 'pairings up' in book 5. Instead we were left with one kiss and alot of arguing. I can only congratulate JK for putting that stuff in there, but it just felt slightly unreal to me. Maybe there will be more stuff happening in book 6 and 7.

What did you think was the most exciting thing that happened in book 5? What was the most disturbing? What left the biggest impression on you?
The most exciting was definitely in the Department of Mysteries! There was so much action... Ron getting strangled by a brain... Ginny breaking her ankle... Luna flying over a table... Hermione getting knocked out... This was JK at the top of her game!

There were two really disturbing moments for me. Harry's detention with professor Umbridge was very disturbing and I honestly felt that someone should have kicked her, or that I should try and get into the book and kick her myself. :) I found that the veil was also disturbing. Sirius fell through it and never came back. Is he dead? Is he behind the veil with the rest of the whispering? Yep, the veil was downright spooky!

As for the part of the book that left the biggest impression on me, that's easy! Dumbledore telling Harry that he must either be murderer or victim was dreadful! At least now we know that Voldemort or Harry WILL die in later books. One can only hope that it's Voldemort that is going to die. ;)

Was the character that died the one you thought it would be? (Be honest now!)
I didn't really try to think who would die. I'd read rumours on the internet that Mrs Weasley, Colin, Ginny, Hagrid or Dumbledore would die and because there were so many possible deaths, I didn't try to think who would be getting the 'chop'.

My friend however told me who dies when I was on page 232! I told him not to tell me for months before the book was released and he told me! I never spoke to him for a week!

Which house would you like to be in and why? Do you think the Sorting Hat would place you in that house?
I think that the Sorting Hat would put me in Ravenclaw because I am quite intelligent. I wouldn't let the Sorting Hat put me in Hufflepuff or Slytherin! and I don't think that the hat would place me into Gryffindor. I hope I'd be put into Gryffindor though!

Do you have any interesting HP stories to share?
I had loads of stories the other day but at the moment I can't think of any! I just hope that JK doesn't end the series by having Harry wake up from a dream or something like that!

Do you have anything else you'd like to add? Maybe a theory you've concocted, a shout-out?
There are a few theories that I have placed on my Harry Potter website. If you want to check it out then here's the web address: http://yrrahrettop.freewebsitehosting.com/Yrrah%20Rettop.htm. I'd like to say hey to all my friends who I've got reading Harry Potter! And my mum and brother as well! Thank you MuggleNet for having this section for me to voice my opinions and of course I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to J.K. Rowling for bringing this masterpiece that is Harry Potter to all of our hearts! Can I also say, Happy Birthday Rupert Grint and to everyone returning to Hogwarts this September, have a safe journey!
