Potter Profile - James

October 19, 2003

I love Harry Potter, because it reminds of being a kid, and the trials and tribs. It also shows me a imaginative world of magic, a place I can escape to any time I please. I love the characters, the style of story telling, and the world it takes place in. I enjoy Harry Potter books more than anyone should.

How and when did you get in to Harry Potter?
On July 11th 2003, the day before my 29th birthday, I saw Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on DVD. I was really engrossed in the film. I enjoyed it very much and thought I should re-watch the first movie and see if it was as cool (I had seen Sorcerer's Stone before but had not remembered enjoying it). Low and behold SS was on that very night on HBO, it was on late but I stayed up and watched it. Needless to say I loved it!! I decided then that I must read all the books. I remembered seeing them at the local Fred Meyers in paperback for $6 bucks a piece. So I said I'll go get them this week, but when I arrived to buy them they had been sold out because of the release of Order of the Phoenix. I was bummed, I decided it was not meant to be that week and I would check back the following week to see if the books had been restocked.

Well, long story short, I never got to go back and check. My sister just happened to have all the books, sans OotP, in first edition hardcover. She said I could have them all. I took them home and read all four books cover to cover in 3 days, then borrowed the fifth book from a friend and read it twice in 2 days.

Skip to present day...I have since purchased the fifth book, the school books set, both DVDs and have read all five books 4 times each, and I am currently on my fifth time through on CoS.

Which Harry Potter book is your favorite?
Without a doubt I have enjoyed each book equally, but if I had to choose just one...I would say Goblet of Fire.

What character can you relate to most?
I see myself in every character to some extent. I am big (6' 7") and loving like Hagrid, I am a troublemaker like the twins, I have a evil side like Malfoy, I am a know-it-all like Hermione, and a worrier like Ron, and part of me is very much like Harry (confused, lonely, angry...).

Are you satisfied with the handling of the "boy/girl stuff" in book 5?
Not really, but I want Ginny and Harry to get together, and Ron and Hermione...I dislike Cho's character now. I should say though, that this is the type of boy/girl behavior that you experience at 15 so it was well written. Bravo to JK!!

What did you think was the most exciting thing that happened in book 5? What was the most disturbing? What left the biggest impression on you?
Exciting: Finding out the prophecy! Disturbing: When Sirius dies. Big Impression: Harry's realization that his dad was human.

Was the character that died the one you thought it would be? (Be honest now!)
Absolutely not, But this is where I differ from the majority. A lot of folks say they thought it'd be Hagrid or Dumbledore, I thought and continued to think until the moment I read it that it would be Lucius Malfoy.

Which house would you like to be in and why? Do you think the Sorting Hat would place you in that house?
Gryffindor, and yes I do think I would be placed there.

Do you have any interesting HP stories to share?
Not really, to me it is a terrific series of books, and great way to enjoy a rainy day, but it is not a life thing for me. So aside from the way I got into HP I don't really have any stories of interest about HP.

Do you have anything else you'd like to add? Maybe a theory you've concocted, a shout-out?
I have about a billion rebuttals for theories I have read across the net, some of them are down right ridiculous and I don't see how they are even possible given the information we have from the books thus far...I will say there are quite a few peeps stretching for a theory. ;)

Here's a shout out! Artemis Fowl and Eion Colfer! Read those books people they are amazing, and they are not HP rip-offs in the least. Also Eion's new book The Wish List! Just finished it and it is awesome! Check him out folks he doesn't get the HP play but he is great in his own!

I think we'd better check with Puddlemere United whether Oliver Wood's been killed during a training session, because she [Angelina] seems to be channeling his spirit.
