Potter Profile - Kristen

July 27, 2003
First of all my name is Kristen, I'm 16 years old, and I live in Illinois. I haven't been a Harry Potter fan since the first book came out, but I have LOVED the books since I first read them. I have read each of the books so many times that I've lost count and I also convinced my sister, mom, and dad to read the books. I've also been known to check my favorite site in the whole world, Mugglenet.com, every 5 minutes for new updates. And the sad thing is that I'm not exaggerating that much (every 6 minutes)! I just don't want to miss any important HP news!
How and when did you get in to Harry Potter?
I got into the books 2 1/2 years ago when I was in 8th grade. I first heard about the books when I was in 7th grade and the 4th book was coming out. At the time I thought that the books were nerdy (What did I know? I read the Sweet Valley books & I'm still ashamed). My parents asked if I wanted them to buy them for me, and I always said no.
But then my family went to Chicago for an annual family Christmas trip and we went to Marshall Fields. The windows were all themed for Harry Potter that year and as I went around and saw the storyline, I was engrossed. We then went into the store and I looked at all of the Harry Potter things I thought that they looked so cool and I asked my parents for the first two books so I could see if I liked them or not.
My parents gave me books one & two a week before Christmas so I could read them in the car as we drove to Colorado. I started Sorcerer's Stone right away before we even left and I couldn't put it down. I finished that one before we left and finished Chamber of Secrets in the car. The day after Christmas I went out and bought books 3 & 4 with gift certificates I got from relatives and read them right away.
After I finished the 4th book I was on a mission, to make my family read the books. My first target was my sister. It was almost a year before I convinced her, and she finished all four books in four days. When I convinced my parents to read the books they both wanted to read them so much we had to buy a second copy of book 3. I have since gotten a second copy of all the books because mine were so used. I am now in the process of convincing my bother to read the books. We have a deal: once I watch all three of the Lord of the Rings movies (which I could only stand because Orlando Bloom was in it), he will read all seven of the books! I hope to spread the Harry Potter joy to all the world!
Which Harry Potter book is your favorite?
It's really hard to say which book is my favorite because I love all of the books so much. The best I can do is limit it down to three. Those 3 are Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, and Order of the Phoenix.
I love PoA because you learn so much about James' past and you are introduced to some of my favorite characters (Sirius Black and Remus Lupin). I almost cried when Sirius asked Harry to live with him and he smiled and Harry said it was the first time he looked like the best man in the picture. I also loved that Lupin was the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
I also love the 4th book for many reasons. Of course because it is so long (the more Harry Potter the better)! I also love that the ending seems to go on forever. The book has so many plot twists you can hardly even keep them straight. When Harry and Cedric touch the Cup you think that's the end, but NO he is transported to the graveyard. And when Harry breaks away from Voldemort and goes back to the maze, you think that's the end, but NO he is taken away by "Moody" and is almost killed. And even after all of that, there is still the "Parting of Ways" which has to be my favorite part of all of the books so far. I find that section so powerful that I can't even explain it.
Now I have a new book to add to my favorites. That is of course, Order of the Phoenix. I loved that you learned so much stuff about many characters that put them in a new light. After reading this book, I have a newfound respect for Snape and hearing about how awful Sirius' family was just made you like him even more. Despite that fact that I was upset about who died, I'm sure J.K. had a good reason for choosing him to kill.
What character can you relate to most?
I can relate to a lot of the characters. I don't think that I can be defined by just one character because I have traits of so many of them. One that I can relate to most is Ron. I think that I am pretty loyal and I can be a little jealous of other people. I am the youngest in my family and I can relate to feeling like you are in the shadows of your older siblings.
I also think I am like George & Fred because I also like to have fun now and then, and I do think I'm pretty funny (I seem to be the only one though). I also don't really care about schoolwork that much and can seem somewhat unmotivated.
Are you satisfied with the handling of the "boy/girl stuff" in book 5?
I am quite satisfied about how Rowling handled the boy/girl stuff in book five! It was just as I suspected, that they didn't have it as a central part of the plot. I think that would have been stupid (sorry Chrissy). I'm not quite as pleased with the way Harry handled the boy/girl stuff. I know that some people did not like Cho, but I did! I was very mad at how stupid Harry acted about that. For once I agreed with Hermione!
What did you think was the most exciting thing that happened in book 5? What was the most disturbing? What left the biggest impression on you?
I think that the most exciting things in the books were D.A. (Dumbledore's Army), because it was exciting to see them defying the ministry and Umbridge, and when Fred and George left Hogwarts and told Peeves to "give her hell" and Peeves actually listened to them and he saluted them!
I didn't even have to think about what was most disturbing because it seems so obvious to me. I was most disturbed by Harry's detentions with Professor Umbridge. I thought it was so sickening that she would make him write with his own blood. Umbridge was definitely the devil!
I think that one thing that left the biggest impression on me was the prophecy. I thought it was so cool that it could have been Neville that had all of the powers and such. Another thing that left a big impression on me was Snape's memory. I was really surprised that James was so mean to him! It really made you think a little about how mean Snape is. I also think that Snape would be a lot nicer to Harry if he didn't have Draco and the other Death Eaters' sons in his class.
Out of all the spells used in the books, which one is your favorite, and why?
There are so many spells that I would love to be able to do. The one that I would love the most is Accio (the summoning charm). I think that it would be so cool because I could be even lazier than I already am. I could sit on the couch, in bed, or on the computer, watching TV and say "Accio Remote" or "Accio Chips" and not even have to move at all. It would also help when I lose things, which I often do. I could just say "Accio Shirt" (or whatever I lost) and it would come to me. I could also use it in this context: "Accio Rupert Grint" or "Accio Orlando Bloom!"
Was the character that died the one you thought it would be? (Be honest now!)
I actually think I was pretty good about predicting who was going to die. I had three people that I suspected. Those three were: Mr. Weasley, Hagrid, and Sirius. And if I do say so myself, those were the only three I really was afraid would die (maybe with the exception of Neville at one point). During the book I thought Hagrid could die because of all of the bruises he had. I obviously thought Mr. Weasley could die because a snake attacked him. And I was right on with Sirius, because he really did die!
Do you have any interesting HP stories to share?
I have a few interesting stories to share, but I'm not sure anyone else will find them interesting (except maybe the people who are involved with the stories).
My first story is that my sister, Alissa, my friend, Kara, and I all made up about 10 HP songs parodies. They will soon be sent into MuggleNet and they are VERY good! Some of them are: Catch the Snitch (Kiss the Girl), Under Hogwarts (Under the Sea), Hogwarts Number 5 (Mambo Number 5), and Potter Fever (I'm a Believer).
My other story is that me, my sister, and my friends all made matching T-shirts to go to Oak Park. The shirts had a picture of the 5th book and said "Harry Potter isn't everything--but it's right up there with oxygen" on the front. On the back they had our favorite HP quotes. On one sleeve we had a Hogwarts crest and on the other side, we put the crest of the house we would be in. I was Ravenclaw along with my friends Chrissy and Anne. My sister and my friends Amanda and Pritha were Slytherin. And my friends Kara, Allison, and Nickie were Gryffindor.
Do you have anything else you'd like to add? Maybe a theory you've concocted, a shout-out?
I have no theories but I have plenty of shout-outs! I'd like to give a shout-out to my fellow HP girls: Alissa (007! It's an outside joke!), Kara (I HAVE always liked Ron & I read them before you!), Chrissy (No Draco/Hermione/ No Fan Fic for you! plus: toe cramps!), Flutie (Amanda, what is that bulge in that picture?), Allison (Purple shirt guy sucks!), Anne, Nickie, Pritha (Let's do it tonight!), and Katie (Even though you haven't finished them yet)!
And to my Muggie boys (even though you probably don't remember me!!): Eric (shout-out from the HP homies! Eric fan club!), Emerson (Why was 6 afraid of 7? Cuz 7 8 9! It's the best joke ever!), and Jamie (you should have used a wheelbarrow!!)
