Name: Nicholas Myers
Age: 20
Locaton: England, UK
MuggleNet Job: Various Roles including Movie Section Manager, Media Capturer, Content Editor,
I post the odd News item, I work on MuggleSpace and I have appeared on several episodes of MuggleCast, Etc.
Years at MN: Nearly 3 years
How did you come to work at MN?
Pure luck – (Felix Felicis style) – and then dedication.
In June 2006 the Queen hosted an 80th Birthday Party at her palace where Jo was set to give a reading. Ciaran, who remains
a long term staff member at MuggleNet, was scheduled to appear at this event to meet Jo and cover the story for Mugglenet.
Unfortunately Ciaran lost his passport and could not attend. Instead he appealed to UK fans to film the event off the television and send it in.
Having volunteered, I managed to capture the event and upload it quicker than any other fansite. The following day Jo was
set to give her first ever TV interview. Pleased with my previous performance I was asked if I could capture this event as
well and send it in. Yet again I managed to upload it quicker than most fansites. Ciaran then asked if IÂ’d be willing to
help take screenshots and type up a transcript - which I gladly did.
To cut the story short, after around 5 months of helping do odd bits for the site I was made a staff member that November.
I began working on the gallery but quickly moved up the ranks, taking on any job that came by. With hard work and dedication,
here I am nearly 3 years later.
(In case any of you were wondering – things worked out for Ciaran in the end. Jo expressed sadness that she missed him that
day and personally invited him to meet with her at the launch of Deathly Hallows. So good news all round!)
Were you a visitor of MN before you worked for the site?
Very much so – I stumbled on MuggleNet shortly after the release of Goblet of Fire. I loved the site and became a frequent (every day) visitor. I had
looked at other Harry Potter fansites but I quickly recognised that MuggleNet was, and remains to this day, the best source of information.
Besides what you currently contribute to MN, is there another job you would love to have, even for a day?
On MuggleNet? Not really, I think I am lucky enough to get to do a bit of everything.
Outside of MuggleNet I aspire to work in the television/film industry as a special effects guy/script writer or in the gaming
industry as a programmer.
If I could do any job for a day I’d be an actor.
How did you become a Harry Potter fan?
My cousin gave me the first book as a present the year of its release but after reading the first chapter I rather shamefully stopped reading it. Having
not read many books for a while, I struggled getting into the story, finding the first chapter slow and uneventful. Fortunately my cousin and her sister
openly praised the book so much that I decided to give it another try. By the time I reached the end of the second chapter I realised how foolish I was.
I raced through the book and loved every second of it. I was a fan ever since. Jo had restored my passion for reading and sparked a passion for all things Potter!
How are you feeling now that the series is over?
I, as do most fans, feel sad that such a big part of my life ended the day Deathly Hallows was released, especially since I was there from the beginning.
With that said my work at MuggleNet means that the fandom can live on.
Ultimately though, Harry Potter will never really be over – it is timeless. Plus there are always the re-reads!
Let's talk magical objects. What would you see standing in front of The
Mirror of Erised?
IÂ’m going to go with something slightly different than love, success, the deceased, fame, fortune etc. IÂ’d just see my reflection staring back at
me with a smile on my face. After all, isnÂ’t that really what we all want - Eternal happiness? (I may also be holding a brand new book series from
JK Rowling! *crosses fingers*)
Pretend that all of the Time Turners were in fact not destroyed. What
would you use one for?
IÂ’d go back and give VoldemortÂ’s parentÂ’s some contraception and recommend they use it!
On a more serious note, there are lots of things in my own life and in others that I’d love to change but it’s the
events of the past that make us who we are today. Best not to mess with what was.
Congratulations! You just inherited a pair of Vanishing Cabinets! Where
would you place them?
Oh wow, how very cool! I think IÂ’ll put one in my house and one in JoÂ’s. That way I could meet a hero of mine -
we could hang out, be pals...I could sneak in and read all the Harry Potter back-story...
If there was a way to make a Horcrux without committing murder, would you
do it?
Yes. I like the prospect of immortality. Storing a bit of soul elsewhere as an insurance policy couldnÂ’t hurt could it?
After all, IÂ’m still waiting on a certain vampire (*cough*EDWARD*cough*) to come along and bite me...in the meantime a Horcrux will have to do!
Finally, which Hallow are you most drawn to and why?
Well since you already gave me a time turner to go back and visit people before they died I donÂ’t think IÂ’ll have a need for the resurrection stone.
A teacher told me to beware of power for it corrupts all – so I guess I won’t be choosing the elder wand either. I do have many uses for an
invisibility cloak though... there are so many mischievous, sneaky things I could do!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Just that I love being part of this fandom and working on MuggleNet. I have learnt so much and met loads of new people from all over the world
in online chats etc. IÂ’d also like to express my gratitude and admiration for Jo, who aside from being a talented author, is a truly inspirational woman.
