June 24 – The New York Times created the Children’s Best Seller list because the Harry Potter books had topped the adult Best Seller list for 79 weeks straight.

July 8Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was published, and midnight release parties were born.

July 16 – The Harry Potter books appeared on the adult New York Times Best Seller list for the last time before being moved to the Children’s Best Seller list.

September 29 – Filming began on the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie.

October 20 – J.K. Rowling discusses the surprising success of Harry Potter on Larry King.

November 14 – J.K. Rowling sets up the Volant Charitable Trust.
