MTV explains why “Deathly Hallows – Part 2” deserved a Best Picture Oscar nomination

With the new rules in place for Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, the Academy is able to nominate between 5 and 10 films for the coveted Oscar. This year, the Academy chose nine films. So why did Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the biggest film of the year with the biggest franchise of all-time, remain left off the list as the tenth nomination? MTV gives us their viewpoint.

To be clear, I’m lamenting the lack of recognition for the nearly perfect eighth and final Potter film, but we Potter fans cannot deny the fact that the franchise as a whole deserved Best Picture consideration. With “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” having paved the way for fantasy films to resonate with Academy voters as well as the general public, and the fact that 10 films can be nominated, it seemed very likely that The Boy Who Lived had a chance at that nomination.

The article goes on to point out some of the films most notable highlights: Alan Rickman’s brilliant performance as Professor Severus Snape, the casting directors for the incredibly impressive cast that they put together over all of these year with the most outstanding and notable British actors of all-time, and also director David Yates, who so successfully added a his direction to close out the series in near perfection.

“Again, when will such amazing and dramatic achievements occur again in cinema? The ‘Harry Potter’ franchise is a perfect storm of so many elements, the proverbial lightning in a bottle that can not be duplicated. A Best Picture nomination was more than a little bit deserved.”
