“Potter” Actor Ralph Fiennes Discusses “Great Expectations” and Admiration for Dickens

In a recent interview with UK newspaper The Guardian, Ralph Fiennes talks about growing up as the eldest of six children, working on Bond, and his latest release, Great Expectations.

The interview also goes into detail on his current project, The Invisible Woman, which he is both directing and starring in as Charles Dickens himself. The film, based on Dicken’s biography, focuses on his secret love for Nelly Ternan and as part of the project, Fiennes has found himself better acquainted with the works of the infamous author.

Fiennes hadn’t read much Dickens before the film got under way but he has put that right. And he talks about Dickens’s feelings: the “shame, doubt and anguish” felt by a married Victorian in a love out of wedlock; the conflict between desire and duty, and the plain fact he “adored Nell”. Dickens would have “worked hard to show he was there for her”.

Great Expectations opens on November 30 and you can also see Ralph in the new James Bond film Skyfall in theaters right now.
