Lumos and LeakyCon Bring Charity Magic to London this week

by Keith Hawk · August 5, 2013

Lumos, the charity founded and chaired by J.K. Rowling to end the systematic placement of children in so called “orphanages” around the world, has teamed up with LeakyCon, a fan conference which grew from the website The Leaky Cauldron, to bring its message and mission to the core worldwide Harry Potter fan community.

Lumos’s attendance and participation in the conference will help spread awareness of the work of the charity which works to help end the harm caused to nearly eight million children around the world who are placed in large residential institutions as a result of poverty, disability and discrimination.

The participation of Lumos at the Leakycon opening ceremonies on August 8 at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London will make this a unique opportunity for the charity to reach out to fans of their founder and help to bring the essential messages of the Harry Potter books into strong relief as its fans celebrate their existence.

Georgette Mulheir, Chief Executive of Lumos stated:

“Growing up in a so called “orphanage” can seriously affect the emotional, physical and psychological development of children and their chances in life as they become adults”

“At Lumos, we want to bring the magic of a full and rich childhood to the millions of children who are denied the opportunity for individual care and attention that is a consequence of being in family, something so many of us take for granted, and we are delighted to be partnering with Leakycon at their first UK event”.

Melissa Anelli, Leakcon founder and Leaky Cauldron website owner stated:

“While this will be the fifth LeakyCon event, it is our first in the UK. We couldn’t come to Harry’s home without making sure to honor the way J.K. Rowling has been a charitable role model to the people who love her books.”

“Since founding in 2009, LeakyCon has had a strong charitable track record and donated more than $220,000 to various activist and humanitarian causes, which makes partnering with Lumos for the first international conference in London a natural fit.”

LeakyCon London features a wide array of formal and informal programming for attendees, including exclusive special events, a literary track, speaker panels, roundtables, rock concerts, costume contests, podcasts, vendor room, craft show, and a charity ball.

The event, opening on August 8 in London, will include appearances, performances, and special events featuring actors from the Harry Potter films, including Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), Alfie Enoch (Dean Thomas), Scarlett Byrne (Pansy Parkinson), Chris Rankin (Percy Weasley), Robbie Jarvis (young James Potter), Ellie Darcey-Alden (Young Lily), Ryan Turner (Hugo Weasley), and Rohan Gotobed (young Sirius Black).

Will you in attendance at this incredible convention? Let us know in the comments below what you are looking forward to the most.
