Behind the scenes with Dan Radcliffe – “A Young Doctor’s Notebook”
In anticipation of the American premiere of A Young Doctor’s Notebook, Ovation has released a series of three on-set featurettes with Dan Radcliffe and Jon Hamm. The television series is based on a collection of short stories by Mikhail Bulgakov about his real life experiences as a country doctor in Russia.
In the interviews for Ovation, the admiration is mutual between both actors, which is clearly evident not only in the shared scenes of the series but also in the way they talk about one another. Jon Hamm, who also has a hand in producing the series, reveals that he suggested Dan Radcliffe for the lead role because he was a “young, pale, frail person who could seemingly fit this part” and only pitched the idea to him after the first script had been written. At their first meeting, Dan confessed to being a huge Bulgakov fan and says that he was “very flattered that I could one day be as handsome as Jon Hamm.”
We also get a behind-the-scenes look and some clips from the first episode of the series. Dan describes the adaptation of the stories as a “cerebral meditation on memory” because of the way they have portrayed the young doctor and the old doctor together in the same scenes, which is a departure from the book. The series is both comedic and full of heavy, dark themes at times, which helped both Jon and Dan step out of the roles they have been known best for in the Madmen and Harry Potter franchises.
