Ten “Potter” Ladies Who Kick Butt

by Caitlin Hart · March 11, 2014

1. Minerva McGonagall

Professor McGonagall doesn’t put up with anyone’s crap. Minerva is tough but good-hearted and never goes down without a fight, standing alongside Harry and the trio until the end of the battle.

2. Hermione Granger

Hermione rests her head on her hand, deep in thought, with a serious expression

Hermione is a given on this list. She uses magic to defeat everyone from schoolyard bullies to the most evil wizard of all time. Hermione is powerful and clever enough to destroy the Horcruxes and helps Harry every step of the way.

3. Ginny Weasley

Despite the disrespect the films did for Ginny, she’s easily one of the toughest gals in the series. It can’t be easy to date “The Chosen One,” but Ginny handles it with power and grace. She’s talented, smart, and saves Dumbledore’s Army when the trio leaves school.

4. Luna Lovegood

Luna’s creativity and bravery set her apart. Part of the group that accompanies Harry to the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix, Luna has a spirit that can’t be broken, even when she is kidnapped in Deathly Hallows. Luna is always true to herself, and nothing’s more badass than that.

5. Lily Evans

Although we don’t get to know much about Lily, what we know is wonderful – she defends Harry literally to the death; she stands up against James when he picks on Snape; she joins the Order right out of school to fight against Voldemort. Lily is spirited, brave, and clever – if nothing else, she is Harry’s mom, and we wouldn’t have the series without her.

6. Cho Chang

I know, I know, what’s Cho doing here? Cho Chang joined Dumbledore’s Army when she was told not to, and it was clearly dangerous to join. She even participated in the Battle of Hogwarts. Cho might not be the toughest girl, but there is no doubt she is smart and courageous.

7. Alice Longbottom

Frank and Alice Longbottom

Alice and Frank Longbottom are part of the original Order of the Phoenix. Her bravery, while eventually leading to her lifetime stay in St. Mungo’s, did help bring down Voldemort (the first time) and protect her son, who became an important wizard himself!

8. Lavender Brown

Lavender Brown

I know, Lavender is annoying. She’s all over Ron and cries a lot. But she’s also a Gryffindor, part of Dumbledore’s army, and courageous till the very end of Deathly Hallows. She’s no Hermione, but Lavender fights for what is right, even when it’s difficult.

9. Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley reprimands Fred, George, and Ron in a still from Chamber of Secrets.

Molly’s iconic “Not my daughter!” line cemented her as the coolest mom in the series. She fiercely defended not only her children but Harry, too, even when it was inconvenient. Molly is tough, knows her way around many useful spells, and works hard to defend what’s right. She’s even a member of the Order! Mrs. Weasley is one tough lady.

10. Fleur Delacour

We first meet Fleur when she participates in the Triwizard Tournament. Despite her sweet and delicate nature, Fleur fights till the end of the Tournament, fought alongside the Order against Voldemort, and protects the trio in her home in Deathly Hallows without hesitation. Fleur is brave, strong, and clever – a formula for badassery!

2004

It’s high time I paid homage to the mighty MuggleNet. Where to start? I love the design, (I currently favour the ‘Dementor’ layout), the polls (I actually voted in the ‘Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?’ one), the pretty-much-exhaustive information on all books and films, the wonderful editorials (more insight there than in several companion volumes I shall not name), 101 Ways to Annoy Lord Voldemort (made me laugh aloud), the Wall of Shame (nearly as funny as some of the stuff I get)… pretty much everything. Webmaster Emerson, Eric, Jamie, Damon, Ben, Matthew, Rachel, Jaymz and Sharon, I salute you.
