This “Potter” Wedding Came Complete with a Gift from an Iconic Character in the Series

by Kevin Assam · January 26, 2015

The fall season – it’s filled with the transitioning signs of shedding trees, auburn leaves, cool winds, leaving for school, and great pumpkin patches. That last part happens to be the very place where Amber and Dan decided to get married, an event that would inevitably become the latest edition to our “Muggle Matrimony” section. Amber, along with her cousin Petey, spent her early days taking time off from school and watching the films when they first debuted. Their adventures took them to the theme park replicas and led them to acquire copious amounts of Potter memorabilia. This was a good thing because by the time Dan came around, Amber was well positioned and trained in the art of converting Potter newbies into Potter aficionados. To Dan’s credit, he had seen all of the movies prior to reading the novels.

Given Amber’s love for the fall, they set the date for November 29. But before that there would be the bridal shower and bachelorette party. The bridesmaids set to work stocking the events with mementos of King’s Cross, the books, pumpkins, gift baskets, wands, and as an added bonus, T-shirts that read “From Muggle to Mrs.”

The wedding ceremony itself was performed in a church that was reminiscent of the Hogwarts castle and incorporated the Gryffindor colors. Similarly, the bridesmaids’ dresses were set in burgundy and accented with gold jewelry. Not to be outdone, Amber sported a replica of Hermione’s necklace from the Deathly Hallows film and a Potter-themed garter. Every detail was magical, down to programs, which featured the Gryffindor crest in the clutches of Hedwig.

But the theme really came out at their reception: a gold ballroom, champagne and burgundy linens, and even a matching cake filled with a pumpkin cream cheese filling. Guests indulged in the cuisine to the sound of “Hedwig’s Theme.” Their own version of Butterbeer (a mix of cream soda, butterscotch schnapps, and whipped cream vodka with a butterscotch drizzle on top) flowed throughout the night in glasses fittingly etched with the words “After All This Time” and “Always.”

Yet, the most unique element of this wedding has to be the personalized Tom Felton photograph that Amber was able to acquire. Apparently, one of her friends came across Mr. Felton himself at the airport a few weeks prior to the wedding. She explained the situation to Tom, and he graciously posed for a laudatory picture with a sign reading “Congratulations, Amber and Dan!” What a phenomenal keepsake to have!

Congratulations indeed to Amber and Dan for throwing a wedding that played fantastic homage to the spirit of the novels and films! Check out Amber and Dan’s Q&A session below, where you might to able to pick up a few ideas if you’re ever in the mood for a themed event. Be sure to let us know your thoughts and remember to check out all of our other quirky and completely dedicated couples in the “Muggle Matrimony” section. As always, head over to our contact page if you think you have an event worth submitting.

Amber and Dan's Q&A

Q: What Hogwarts houses do you both belong to?

Amber: I am a Gryffindor and Dan is a Ravenclaw!

Q: Did you always know you would want to throw a Potter-themed wedding?

Amber: I definitely always wanted to have a Potter-themed wedding but I wasn’t sure I’d find a guy who would actually be okay with it!  I guess that is one of the reasons Dan is perfect for me.

Q: Burgundy and Gold aren't the friendliest of a match. How did you ensure that the color palette didn't become gaudy?

Amber: Burgundy and Gold can definitely be a gaudy combination but luckily there are A LOT of shades of gold and I went with more of a champagne colored gold than a yellow gold to keep it looking classier.

Q: Tell us a bit more about the cuisine? What was the process like in deciding what to reproduce from the novel?

Amber: I knew that I definitely wanted Butterbeer and that was the most important thing to me.  Reproducing it was difficult because I was really picky about how it tasted (I wanted it to taste exactly like it does at the park, but as an alcoholic version).  I wasn’t really able to get the hotel to replicate the topping that they have at the park so I had to go with whipped cream and butterscotch drizzle on the top, but it still turned out really well!  I also knew I wanted some of the sweets and I do know how to make cauldron cakes (upside down cupcakes with chocolate mousse filling) so I made some of those and put them out on the dessert table!  The wedding cake was decorated with a burgundy ribbon and burgundy and gold icing and instead of the traditional almond cake with almond filling, I decided with a pumpkin cream cheese filling instead! The dinner was your average wedding dinner, just chicken with a cream sauce, filet mignon, asparagus, and garlic parmesan mashed potatoes.

Q: What's the best piece of advice for others considering throwing a themed event?

Amber: Don’t worry about what other people think!  I always try to make everyone happy so I worried a little that people wouldn’t get my theme or think it was tacky, but in the end, I am so happy with everything I did.  The people who don’t know Harry Potter did not notice the details so they did not care and the people who did notice the details loved it.  It’s a huge part of who I am and I’m so glad I let that come through on my wedding day!

Q: You got a great souvenir from Tom Felton. What was your friend's experience like when meeting him?

Lori [Amber's friend]: When I met Tom, he was actually looking to buy a gigantic chocolate chip cookie. He was very nice when I approached him, welcomed me to NYC, and used my phone to take a bunch of selfies of him and myself. He did keep trying to walk away but stopped every time I asked him for something. The only weird part was when his crew started filming me for his documentary.

Q: Have you ever contacted him since?

Amber: Other than tweeting the picture at him, I haven’t contacted him and neither has my friend!  I was hoping they’d become really close and she’d bring him as her date to my wedding, but no such luck!

Q: Which character would you invite from the series to attend your wedding?

Amber: Dobby!  He is one of my favorite characters and I bet he’d give us an amazing pair of old, mismatched socks as a wedding present!

Q: Who from the novels would you hire for overseeing entertainment at your reception?

Amber: Fred and George Weasley!  I bet nobody throws a party like the Weasley twins!

Q: What relationship advice do you most take away from the series and apply to your own life?

Amber: Stick up for the people you care about no matter what anyone else thinks.  Harry demonstrated this throughout the entire series, he was never ashamed of his friends and always stuck up for them even when they were sort of outcasts (Hagrid, Luna, Dobby…).  There are a lot of other great examples of this in the books, Fleur’s love for Bill Weasley after the werewolf attack, Tonks’ love for Lupin…etc.
