Top Six Reasons to Join a Muggle Quidditch Team

by Rachael Dechert · July 23, 2015

Muggle Quidditch is a huge part of my life. I’ve spent the past two years practicing and going to tournaments. These are the reasons why I believe that everyone should get involved in Quidditch.

Uniforms

Unfortunately, there are no robes in Muggle Quidditch. Instead, we have jerseys, headbands, and bright yellow outfits. Each team designs a uniform of their own. The jerseys are my favorite part. Each player chooses what they want written on the back. Normally a name, or nickname, and occasionally a symbol. What would you get on the back of yours?

Athleticism

In high school, I hated playing sports and greatly disliked running. Then I found something worth running for – Quidditch. Athleticism will never be my strong point, but after two years I could run laps and even occasionally be the Snitch Runner. Want to know more about the physicality of the sport? Check out Mudbloods, a documentary about one team’s journey to the World Cup.

Broomsticks

In Muggle Quidditch, like in the Harry Potter books, team members must remain on their broomsticks at all times. Not having magic makes this a little bit more difficult and a lot more fun. Quidditch players can choose to buy the official brooms or make their own from PVC pipe and duct tape. Which would you choose?

Go to Tournaments

There are Quidditch tournaments all over the world. The best teams from around the country come together to compete at the World Cup every year. At these tournaments, there are Quidditch matches, booths where you can purchase merchandise and food, and tons of Harry Potter fans.

Make New Friends

I had a hard time making friends after transferring to a new college, so I joined the Quidditch team. This helped me find a bunch of new friends whom I had things in common with. When you join a Quidditch team, you join a fantastic community filled with amazing athletes and fans.

There is nothing better than being part of a Quidditch team. The best thing is that you feel like you actually are in Harry Potter. There is nothing more magical than running around with a broom between your legs. Muggle Quidditch is constantly evolving and becoming more mainstream. I highly recommend joining your closest college or community team.
