“Harry Potter” Alumni This Month on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video

by Kayla Hoyet · October 17, 2015

Online entertainment giants Netflix and Amazon Instant Video have some pretty amazing titles coming this October, several of which feature some of our favorite Harry Potter alumni. While some titles won’t be released until later this month, most are already available for our viewing pleasure. Check out some of these titles the next time you’re itching for a good movie!

Netflix US Releases

  • Charlie in the Chocolate Factory features Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Bucket, Charlie’s Mother. The sweet and sagely role is a far departure from Helena’s portrayal of Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been available to Netflix US viewers since October 1.

Netflix UK Releases

  • War Horse is a truly heroic tale about a young man and his horse, set circa World War I. This movie is an absolute treat with a beautiful and Kleenex-worthy story, but you might notice something else. David Thewlis, who portrayed everyone’s favorite werewolf Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films, has a minor role in the film. War Horse was made available for Netflix UK viewers on October 1.
  • About Time is a beautiful story about love… and time travel. Domhnall Gleeson, who portrays Bill Weasley, stars in the film as time traveler Tim Lake, and Bill Nighy, who brought Minister Rufus Scrimgeour to life in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, also makes an appearance as Tim’s father. The film has been available to Netflix UK viewers since October 3.
  • Saving Mr. Banks is the story of the meeting between Walt Disney and author P.L. Travers. Travers is the author of the Mary Poppins books, and Disney invites her to discuss adapting her books for the big screen. Emma Thompson, who portrays P.L. Travers in the film, brought quirky Divination Professor Sybil Trelawney to life in the Harry Potter films. Saving Mr. Banks will be available to Netflix UK viewers on October 24.

Amazon Instant Video Releases

  • Astro Boy is an animated adventure about an android boy who breaks away from his creator to find his purpose and ends up becoming a hero. The film features an all-star cast, including the talented Bill Nighy, who voices Dr. Elefun and Robotsky in the film. Astro Boy was made available on Amazon Instant Video on October 1.
  • The Secret Garden is a 1993 book-to-film adaptation about a young girl orphaned by an earthquake. She goes to live with her uncle and in exploring his estate, unearths an old, neglected garden and a few other secrets as well. Dame Maggie Smith, who portrayed Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, brings the character of Mrs. Medlock to life in The Secret Garden, which has been available on Amazon Instant Video since October 1.

Tell us what you think! What will you be streaming this October?
