Reptile Awareness Day: The Seven Slytherins You Need to Be Aware Of

by Rachael Dechert · October 21, 2015

Today is Reptile Awareness Day. That means that it is the best day to be aware of our favorite Slytherins whether they are on the light side or the Dark side. Slytherins have a bad reputation, but today is our day to take that reputation and turn it around. Sure, our qualities of sly and cunning can lead to the Dark side, but they can also help defeat Voldemort. Let’s explore some of our favorite Slytherins.

1. Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy is my favorite Slytherin because he is incredibly powerful and cunning. He uses these skills to try to keep his family safe. He joined Lord Voldemort, but he did it to preserve his family and fight for his beliefs. He ended up causing Draco and Narcissa a lot of pain, but that was not his intention.

2. Severus Snape

Severus Snape was a very brave man. He managed to spy on Voldemort for years, and Voldemort believed he was loyal until he died. This is because Severus was a true Slytherin, proving that you do not need to be a pure-blood to uphold the House’s image.

3. Tom Riddle

Tom Riddle started Hogwarts as a young orphan who wanted to learn everything that he could. He ended up becoming Lord Voldemort, one of the most evil wizards in history. He was the true Heir of Slytherin and opened the Chamber of Secrets while he was at Hogwarts.

He also owns a super cool snake. Nagini is awesome.

4. Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange holds the title for most terrifying Slytherin. Out of everyone on this list, she is the one whom I would be most scared about crossing. Her time in Azkaban made her even more sadistic and crazy. She was a devout follower of the Dark Lord and was willing to do anything that he asked.

5. Regulus Black

When I think of the ideal Slytherin, I think of Regulus Black. He was cunning enough to steal Voldemort’s locket and managed to keep Voldemort from finding out. After joining the Death Eaters, he defected because of Voldemort’s mistreatment of Kreacher. Loyalty to family and friends is very important to Slytherins. Regulus had a huge role in defeating Voldemort, and he stayed true to his House until the very end.

6. Andromeda Tonks

Andromeda was Sirius Black’s favorite cousin. She graduated from Hogwarts and fell in love with Edward “Ted” Tonks. She was disowned for marrying a Muggle-born, but she stood up for what she believed in.

7. Salazar Slytherin

We can’t have a list of Slytherins without mentioning the man who started it all, Salazar Slytherin. Salazar was a Parselmouth and an expert at Legilimency. He created the House of Slytherin and made it a safe haven for the sly and cunning. Yes, he did want to restrict Muggle-borns from Hogwarts, but consider what would have happened if the wrong Muggle family heard about Hogwarts.

Salazar has a reptile of his own. His Basilisk lived inside of the Chamber of Secrets until Harry Potter killed it. Its venom made the Sword of Gryffindor capable of destroying Voldemort’s Horcruxes. So Salazar Slytherin ended up helping to destroy his heir.

Did we include your favorite Slytherin? How do you show your Slytherin pride? Let us know in the comments.
