Eddie Redmayne, Maggie Smith Nominated for SAG Awards

by Sophie Reid · December 9, 2015

It’s that time of year – awards season has well and truly begun.

Yesterday, we learned the shortlist for the upcoming Writers’ Guild Awards. Today, it’s the turn of the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards). We’re used to seeing plenty of familiar names among the nominations and winners, and this year, of course, we’re able to add the stars of the upcoming film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) is among those nominated. Eddie is nominated, once again for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, for his role in The Danish Girl. Last year, Eddie picked up the award for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Alicia Vikander, who stars alongside Eddie, is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

Michael Fassbender, who stars in Steve Jobs alongside Fantastic Beasts actress Katherine Waterston (Tina), is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. Kate Winslet, who also stars in the film, is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

Saoirse Ronan, who stars in Brooklyn alongside Julie Walters (Molly Weasley), Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn), and Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley), is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

Moving onto TV nominations, Downton Abbey plays a large part in the nominations once again as the final series of the drama airs. The show, starring Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall), is nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Maggie Smith is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.

Game of Thrones, which starred Nat Tena (Nymphadora Tonks), David Bradley (Argus Filch), and Michelle Fairley (Mrs. Granger), has also been nominated for several awards. The series has been nominated for Oustanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series. Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

And finally, Viola Davis, who stars in How to Get Away with Murder alongside Alfie Enoch (Dean Thomas), is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role in the series.

Congratulations to all the nominees!

The awards will be announced on January 30, 2016. Find out more details here.

Potter Quote

“Kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life with a beast. Yet one of your teachers argued strongly against your expulsion. I wonder, what makes Albus Dumbledore so fond of you, Mr. Scamander?”
