The Ghosts of Oz

by Melissa Graham · January 20, 2016

One of my favorite movies — aside from Harry Potter, of course — will always be The Wizard of Oz. As a little girl, I must have watched it a million times over and still couldn’t get enough of it. A week ago, I was watching the movie with my kids, and at the end, when the quartet obtained their deepest desires, I couldn’t help but notice that the things they wanted most were similar to the traits desired by each noble House of Hogwarts. The Cowardly Lion wanted courage, something admired by Gryffindor. The Scarecrow just wanted some brains, and we all know how highly Ravenclaw regards those who thirst for knowledge and seek wisdom.

My pondering resulted in a small collection of crossover fan art I call “The Ghosts of Oz.” It’s not a sorting of the four characters so much as a re-imagining of each of them as a Hogwarts House ghost.

Gryffindor

How perfect is it that this ghost not only wanted courage, above all else, but was also a lion! The King of the Forest would, without question, find a home in Gryffindor Tower.

Ravenclaw

He wanted a brain, and he got one! So overjoyed with his newfound education, Scarecrow would find plenty of like-minded students in Ravenclaw.

Hufflepuff

This hard-working lumberjack has so much love to give now that he has a real true-beating heart. He’s a lover, not a fighter, and is sure to find love and acceptance in Hufflepuff.

Slytherin

Some might say Dorothy is our very own Bloody Baroness: the Butcher of Munchkinland. I say she is just a girl on a mission to get back to her family, and the lives of two witches were not going to get in the way. Plus, she seems to gather followers as easily as a certain Dark wizard who shall not be named.

Potter Quote

“My brothers, my sisters. The clock is ticking faster. We who live for freedom, for truth, and for love. The moment has come to share my vision of the future that awaits if we do not rise up and take our rightful place in the world. Where we wizards are free. Aurors, join me in this circle, pledge to me your eternal allegiance, or die.”
