Six Reasons Why Ravenclaws Are Ravingly Radiant

by Mikaela Martin, Zoé Fleury · August 25, 2017

Ravenclaws need more love! They’re a group of seriously talented individuals who deserve recognition. Ravenclaws are quirky and accepting. They celebrate the wonderful eccentricities within themselves and others. So without further ado, here are six reasons why Ravenclaws are awesome!

Ravenclaws are creative.

Ravenclaws are imaginative. They excel at any project given to them. They’re the kids who doodle brilliant, elaborate scenes during class and modestly tuck them away as you stare in wonder. They’re writers, inventors, painters, and musicians. Ravenclaws are flexible and use their knowledge to attempt impressive feats and experiments intended to better the wizarding world. Some notable Ravenclaws include Ignatia Wildsmith (the inventor of Floo Powder), Garrick Ollivander, Filius Flitwick, and of course, Luna Lovegood, whose mother died due to a failed experiment. I imagine Ollivander was the perfect example of a Ravenclaw student. As a boy, he was probably caught sneaking into the forest to find magical creature parts to make wands that he’d fiddle with during class.

Ravenclaws value knowledge.

Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure” (DH 404).

Ravenclaws make great teachers. They know that knowledge is power over ignorance. Academics help preserve the knowledge from the past and learn from humanity’s mistakes. They also help share important information through writing, teaching, and art. Flitwick is possibly one of the most effective teachers at Hogwarts. He’s patient, concise in instruction, and facilitates a comfortable classroom where students can explore their strengths.

Ravenclaws are enthusiastic, as most geeks tend to be. Sometimes they become fixated on what could be perceived as odd things (Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, wands, Memory Charms), but that focus helps them become complete experts in their fields.

Ravenclaws are constantly evolving with their drive to learn.

Ravenclaws expose themselves to multiple perspectives in the world. This open-minded approach helps foster empathy and problem-solving skills. Those who love to learn are more prone to evolve as their opinions change to accommodate new knowledge. The depth of wisdom gained from exploring different points of view helps people make logical decisions that benefit the majority. Therefore, Ravenclaws may be predisposed to leadership positions where they may face difficult decisions.

Ravenclaws are intuitive observers.

Luna Lovegood not only has an incredible sense of who she is, but she also sees the true essence of others. For every “odd” thing she may say, there’s a nugget of wisdom to counteract it. She’s able to identify Harry Potter disguised by Polyjuice Potion at a busy wedding by observing his body language. She’s also able to gauge other people’s emotions and actions accurately. These are highly coveted skills that we should all aspire to. Understanding others is the first step toward compassion.

Ravenclaws have the most impressive requirement for entering their common room!

I just had to include this one. Hats off to the Ravenclaws who solved complicated riddles every single time they needed to enter their common room! Now that’s dedication to mental exercises! Rowena Ravenclaw must have been a drill sergeant with her students. Ravenclaws are forced to grow their critical thinking skills every day. The fact that they all handle the frustration of solving a riddle after a long day of classes is an impressive feat. Ravenclaws, you have my utmost respect!
