What Are the “Harry Potter” Characters Dressing Up As?

by Mikaela Renshaw · October 15, 2017

One of the best parts of Halloween is the costumes. But deciding on the perfect costume can be hard. So to give you some inspiration, here’s what the Harry Potter characters are going as this year.

1. Harry Potter

Harry never had much chance to dress up for Halloween, so he’s still a little unsure of how to go about it. In the end, he chose to go for the classic ghost costume, a sheet with eyeholes, both because, he thought it was ironic, given that’s he’s actually died, and because the costume keeps anyone from recognizing him. This way he can enjoy Halloween as himself, not as the Chosen One.

2. Hermione Granger

Hermione decided that, if she was going to dress up, she might as well make the experience educational. As such, she chose to go as one of her favorite historical figures, Mary Wollstonecraft, the author of The Vindication of the Rights of Women. She’s armed with dozens of interesting facts to give out to any trick or treaters who come to her door. However, she did make sure to buy some candy for them as well.

3. Ron Weasley

Ron chose to go as a Chudley Canons Quidditch player. The reason why is twofold. The first reason is that it shows his eternal love and loyalty to the team. (Someday they will win a match! They’re just going through a rough patch right now.) The second reason is because he already owned a set of robes, so it made for an easy costume.

4. Ginny Weasley

Ginny initially planned to dress up as a member of the Holyhead Harpies, but after she learned that Ron was also going as a Quidditch player, she changed her mind. Now she’s going as a Celtic warrior. Her hair already makes her look the part, and she greatly enjoys waving around the sword that comes with it. Her brothers don’t appreciate it quite as much, though.

5. Luna Lovegood

Luna, to no one’s surprise, decided to dress up as one of her favorite creatures from the Quibbler: the Crumple-Horned Snorkack. Every single bit of her costume, from her feet to her horn, has been handmade, although the quality looks professional. Still, the unusualness of the costume and the whimsical air it gives off prove without a shadow of a doubt that Luna is the creator.

6. Neville Longbottom

Neville chose to dress up as something scary for Halloween this year. So he naturally decided to go as the scariest thing he could think of: Severus Snape. He used a potion to grow his hair out and dye it black for the holiday, and that, paired with a billowing black robe, helps him pull off a pretty good Snape. He’s still working on getting the sneer down, though.

7. Draco Malfoy

Draco was initially reluctant to dress up, but he eventually conceded. However, he did refuse to dress up as anything ridiculous. As such, he decided to go as a Victorian gentleman, a costume that makes him look distinguished and easily shows off his wealth. It also has the slight side effect of making him look like a short-haired version of his father. However, no one’s told him that yet.

8. Minerva McGonagall

This Halloween, Professor McGonagall proved that she did, in fact, have a sense of humor when she decided to dress up as Albus Dumbledore. In addition to the fake beard and wig, she’s borrowed one of Dumbledore’s old robes to complete the costume. That being said, many people would have perhaps appreciated it if she’d picked a robe that wasn’t so eye-searingly bright.

It’s high time I paid homage to the mighty MuggleNet. Where to start? I love the design, (I currently favour the ‘Dementor’ layout), the polls (I actually voted in the ‘Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?’ one), the pretty-much-exhaustive information on all books and films, the wonderful editorials (more insight there than in several companion volumes I shall not name), 101 Ways to Annoy Lord Voldemort (made me laugh aloud), the Wall of Shame (nearly as funny as some of the stuff I get)… pretty much everything. Webmaster Emerson, Eric, Jamie, Damon, Ben, Matthew, Rachel, Jaymz and Sharon, I salute you.

Did You Know

The first review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was given by Alice Newton, the daughter of the founder of Bloomsbury, at age 8: “The excitement in this book made me feel warm inside. I think it is possibly one of the best books an 8/9 year old could read.”

Potter Quote

“What happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Quirrell is a complete secret, so, naturally, the whole school knows.”
