Family Portraits Starring New “Cursed Child” London Cast Revealed

The producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London have released a set of family portraits starring the new cast members! This first-look set by Charlie Gray gives fans a taste of what’s to come with the new cast’s first performance. This is now the third cast ensemble for the production, and they will debut at the Palace Theatre in London on May 23, 2018.

Nicola Alexis (Hermione Granger), Helen Aluko (Rose Granger-Weasley), and Thomas Aldridge (Ron Weasley)

 

James Howard (Draco Malfoy) and Jonathan Case (Scorpius Malfoy)

 

Joining the cast are Jamie Ballard as Harry Potter, Susie Trayling as Ginny Potter, Joe Idris-Roberts as Albus Potter, and Jonathan Case as Scorpius Malfoy.

Ballard’s previous theater credits include Mother Christmas for Hampstead Theatre. Trayling’s other theater credits include King John for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Idris-Roberts is also playing the title role in Pinocchio for the National Theatre. Case is making his professional stage debut and has appeared on film in Undergods.

Nicola Alexis is moving from the Cursed Child ensemble cast into the role of Hermione Granger; other continuing cast members include Thomas Aldridge as Ron Weasley, Helen Aluko as Rose-Granger Weasley, and James Howard as Draco Malfoy.

Alexis has performed in Beauty and the Beast at Elgiva Theatre. Aldrige’s previous theater credits include Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre. Aluko has appeared in Doctor Faustus for the Royal Exchange Theatre. Finally, Howard has performed in Brave New World for Northampton Theatre Royal.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first of the eight to be presented on-stage. Since its premiere at the Palace Theatre in London in June 2016, the play has won 24 major British theater awards and has become the most awarded production in the history of the Olivier Awards. The Broadway production has received 21 nominations across the Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and Drama League Awards and has won six Outer Critics Circle awards. The play is also set to open in Australia at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in early 2019.

Ahead of the new cast’s first performance at London’s Palace Theatre on Wednesday (23 May 2018), the Producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child release a first-look set of portraits by Charlie Gray.

Seen in character for the first time are Jamie Ballard as Harry Potter, Susie Trayling as Ginny Potter, Nicola Alexis as Hermione Granger, Joe Idris-Roberts as Albus Potter and Jonathan Case as Scorpius Malfoy. Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Jack Thorne, directed by John Tiffany with movement by Steven Hoggett, set by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music & arrangements by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, illusions & magic by Jamie Harrison, music supervision & arrangements by Martin Lowe and casting by Julia Horan CDG.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The critically acclaimed production received its world premiere in June 2016 at the Palace Theatre in London.

Since its premiere, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has won twenty-four major British theatre awards including the Evening Standard Best Play Award as well as a record-breaking nine Olivier Awards - including Best New Play and Best Director - the most awarded production in the history of the Oliviers. The Broadway production officially opened to equal critical acclaim at the Lyric Theatre last month and has subsequently received numerous Broadway accolades, including ten Tony Award nominations, eight Drama Desk Award nominations, three Drama League Award nominations and is the winner of six Outer Critics Circle awards. In early 2019 the Australian production will open at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.

Cast Biographies

Thomas Aldridge continues as Ron Weasley. His previous theatre credits include Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre, Made in Dagenham at the Adelphi Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew for the Open Air Theatre Regent’s Park, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe for Birmingham Rep, The Secret Garden, Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure for West Yorkshire Playhouse and Birmingham Rep, His Dark Materials - National tour, Only the Brave for Soho Theatre, and High Society at the Shaftesbury Theatre. His television credits include Undercover, Titanic, Call the Midwife, Silent Witness, Primeval, Eastenders, Law & Order, Doctors, The Support Group, The Bill and Hope & Glory.

Nicola Alexis begins as Hermione Granger. Her past theatre credits include Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Original Company at The Palace Theatre, Beauty and the Beast at Elgiva Theatre, Clybourne Park at Wyndham’s Theatre, The Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew both in a US touring production, Lady in the Van at Salisbury Playhouse, Three Sisters at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Bacchai and Jitney both for the National Theatre, Macbeth for the Orange Tree Theatre, One Love at the Bristol Old Vic, Emma at the Tricycle Theatre and Indecent Desires at the Lyric Hammersmith. Her television credits include Obsession: Dark Desires, Doctors, EastEnders, Desperados, Absolute Power, Holby City, Dangerfield, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Summerhill, Commander IV, The Bill, The Baddiel Syndrome and Happy and Zappy.

Helen Aluko continues as Rose Granger-Weasley and is an original member of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child company. Her previous theatre credits include Doctor Faustus for the Royal Exchange Theatre, Once Language, Many Voices for TNT, The Price for Walking Forward, The Wind in the Willows for Sixteen Feet Productions and Beauty and the Beast at Theatre Royal Stratford East. Her television credits include The Driver.

Jamie Ballard joins the Company to play Harry Potter. His previous theatre credits include Mother Christmas and In The Vale of Heath for Hampstead Theatre, Uncle Vanya for Theatr Clwyd/Sheffield Crucible, The White Devil and Troilus and Cressida for Shakespeare’s Globe, Ghosts for Home in Manchester, King John for the Rose Theatre, Macbeth for Trafalgar Studios, Scenes from an Execution, Antigone, Warhorse, Saint Joan, Emperor and Galilean and Some Trace of Her for the National Theatre, The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, Written on the Heart, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, King John, As You Like It and A Midsummer Night’s Dream all for the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Devil Inside Him for the National Theatre of Wales, Thyestes for the Arcola Theatre, Hamlet, The Changeling, Macbeth, Troilus and Cressida and As You Like It all for the Tobacco Factory, All’s Well That Ends Well for the Young Vic, The Ark and Covenant for Battersea Arts Centre, The Beaux Stratagem for Bristol Old Vic and The Duchess of Malfi for Salisbury Playhouse. Jonathan Case joins the Company to play Scorpius Malfoy where he will make his professional stage debut. His television credits include Holby City and Orton: Laid Bare and on film he has been seen in Undergods.

James Howard continues as Draco Malfoy and is an original member of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child company. His previous theatre credits include Brave New World for Northampton Theatre Royal, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, Mojo, King Lear and Morte D’Arthur for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Not About Heroes for Blackeyed Theatre, Twelfth Night and Ivanov for Donmar Warehouse, Antony and Cleopatra for the Manchester Royal Exchange and The Duchess of Malfi for the National Theatre. His television credits include Black Mirror, Dark Matters, Skins, Spooks, Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Midsomer Murders and Dream Team. On film his credits include Survivor, The Theory of Everything, The Oxford Murders and Penelope.

Joe Idris-Roberts joins the Company to play Albus Potter, and is currently playing the title role in Pinocchio for the National Theatre. His other theatre credits include Eyes Closed Ears Covered for The Bunker, Forty Years On for Chichester Festival Theatre, The Philanderer for The Orange Tree, The History Boys and Showtune: The Jerry Herman Review for The Forum Theatre, Chester and Jesus Christ Superstar for Clwyd Theatr Cymru.

Susie Trayling joins the Company to play Ginny Potter.
