These Magical Maps Reveal the Top “Harry Potter” Searches in Your State

by McKay S. · April 26, 2019

I’m a sucker for a good infographic, and Rebecca and her team at Go Fish Digital created these magical ones showing the top Harry Potter searches in each state. For the top searched books, they looked at search data from the last 12 months for the seven Harry Potter books to determine which is the most searched for in each state. For the top searched spells, they looked at search data from the last 12 months for the 100+ spells used in the Harry Potter books in order to determine which is the most searched for in each state, each region, and overall in the United States. The list of spells is based on the spell list published on Pottermore.

The Most Searched for Harry Potter Spell in Every State

Alaska’s most searched for spell is Lumos, probably because its inhabitants spend so many months in the dark each winter!

Hot, dry Arizona searched for the spell Aguamenti the most. Someone get those desert dwellers a cool glass of water!

Colorado, with its mountains full of wildlife, apparently wanted to learn about Expecto Patronum. Did y’all see an animal and just know it would be your Patronus?

Is North Carolina showing its Southern hospitality by searching Tergeo, a spell used for cleaning? Bless y’all’s hearts.

What’s with Alabama searching for the Growing Charm, Engorgio? Are you trying to make room in your bellies for some traditional comfort food? If so, I’m on my way!

Everything may be bigger in Texas, but maybe residents don’t want as much attention as they get. Their most searched for spell was Obscuro, a blindfolding spell.

I’d also like to know why New York is the only state trying to set everything on fire. And we aren’t talking about the Incendio incantation that Hermione used in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but Fiendfyre like Crabbe conjured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. You guys okay up there?

The Most Searched for Harry Potter Book in Every State

Tennessee and Utah must be full of a new generation of Potterheads because they tended to search for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone over all other books!

I’ve only ever personally seen a rattlesnake while in Nevada, so it makes sense to me that the people in that state are searching for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Sometimes I wish I were a Parselmouth like Harry, and I think Nevadans may agree with me!

Only Alaska and Wyoming searched for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the most. And Montana and Maine get me because they were looking up Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, my personal favorite book in the series.

Mostly, I want to know why everyone seems to be looking up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Did you never finish the book series? Or do y’all in those states just really need a good cry? Because same.

If you’re in the United States, which state do you live in? Did you contribute to these searches? Are you surprised by the results? Let us know in the comments!

Potter Quote

“I don’t know who Maxime thinks she’s kidding. If Hagrid’s half-giant, she definitely is. Big bones… the only thing that’s got bigger bones than her is a dinosaur.”
