Emma Watson and More Sign UN Open Letter

by Gayane Kaligian · January 30, 2020

Emma Watson knows how to champion a cause. That’s why it’s no surprise that when a group of activists, actors, and celebrities signed an open letter for the United Nations’ Global Goals campaign demanding that world leaders take action against poverty, inequality, and climate change, her name was one of the first on the list.

Watson signs next to other Potter alumni like Dame Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry, as well as stars like Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Idris Elba. The letter calls for leaders to focus on fighting against the climate emergency facing the planet, following remarks to that same effect by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Fellow actor and activist Forest Whitaker also came out in strong support of the initiative:

I’m glad to be able to support these incredible activists who have dedicated their lives to fighting for change and use my voice to help make theirs louder. We all have to use whatever tools we have to help achieve the Global Goals. This call to action from such a diverse range of people makes me optimistic that together we can make 2020 the year we change course and deliver for people and planet and secure a peaceful world.

Richard Curtis, Sustainable Development Goals advocate, screenwriter, and cofounder of Project Everyone, is proud to present this letter as a step toward raising awareness for the goals of the UN’s initiative:

At this moment, the end of the first month of 2020, this open letter and focus on the Global Goals is more vital than ever. I am delighted that the letter has been signed by these 20 global activists, who represent different causes but ultimately the same objective. They are supported by 2000 brilliant advocates from the arts, sports, civil society, tech and philanthropy. I’m feeling optimistic and am holding out for radical progress this year.

Hopefully, the awareness raised by these activists and public figures will help bring about change and success for the UN’s goals. The full text of the letter reads as follows:

Dear World Leaders,
This is an emergency.
We are activists for different causes from across the world, writing as one for the first time to demand your immediate action in this critical year.
5 years ago, at the United Nations, 193 countries committed to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
A historic plan to end extreme poverty, conquer inequality and fix the climate crisis.
Look at our world now.
Our climate is heating up.
Natural disasters are increasing.
Millions flee their homes.
Children suffer without vital food and healthcare.
Activists are murdered for their views.
Girls and women are refused an education and subjected to discrimination and violence.
But we still dare to hope that in 2020 you will act decisively and courageously and kickstart a Decade of Action.
We need you to act faster.
To find the finance. To track implementation. To unlock radical solutions.
We are watching you. And we will fight every day, for people, for planet.
There are not just a few of us – there are millions with one voice and one question.
How will you keep your promise and deliver dramatic progress towards the Global Goals this year?
We await your urgent reply.
