Suspension of “Cursed Child” Productions Extended Through End of May

by Britney Piercey · April 9, 2020

Following the recent spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and how carefully we must follow social distancing rules, various theaters have decided to suspend performances of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Previously, productions had been suspended at the Palace Theatre in London, United Kingdom. On April 6, the official Twitter account of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London informed fans that productions of the theatrical play will be suspended until May 31 following instruction from the Society of London Theatre. This is due to the UK Government’s lockdown procedures following the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing is a must during times like this to keep everyone safe.

The Princess Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, had planned to suspend performances until April 12 but has now decided it would be best to suspend all performances originally scheduled until May 31. All tickets will be automatically set to a new date starting October 7.

The Mehr! Theatre am Großmarkt in Hamburg has already postponed performances until October, and the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto is currently expected to begin performances the same month.

As of April 8, all performances of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre in New York have been postponed through June 7.

Unlike the other productions, the San Francisco show at the Curran Theatre has only been suspended through early May. Previously, productions here were only suspended through March.

More information regarding ticket exchanges and refunds can be found on the London, Melbourne, and New York production websites.

We hope to see performances from the beloved Cursed Child actors and actresses back soon! Until then, continue the magic at home!

Press Release

MEDIA STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TUESDAY 7 APRIL 2020

The producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child have a commitment to the safety and peace of mind of all its audiences, cast and company, and theatre staff.

In line with the latest government advice to prevent the spread of COVID-19, further changes will be made to the performance schedule of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre.

Performances from Wednesday 15 April to Sunday 31 May will be postponed and rescheduled. Ticket holders will be automatically moved to an alternative date from Wednesday 7 October onwards, with the same seating allocation they originally booked.

Affected customers will be contacted directly with details of their rescheduled date. Provisions will be made for those unable to attend the postponed performance they’ve been allocated.

Please be assured the producers are closely following the guidance of the Australian Federal and Victorian Governments. The schedule will be reviewed again after that period, based on the most up-to-date advice.

The latest information regarding ticketing policy and performances, including a list of rescheduled dates, is regularly updated on the play’s official social media channels and website, www.harrypottertheplay.com/au/.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child celebrated its first birthday last month with a special gala performance. Over the past year, it has welcomed 326,500 people through the doors from 42 different countries, well surpassing any previous record set by a stage play in the history of Australian theatre. The production’s record-breaking Melbourne run remains a long-term commitment, and it will return to full force at the Princess Theatre when it is safe to do so.

The producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child wish to thank audiences for their kind messages of support during what is a difficult time for so many across the world. They urge everyone to stay safe and look out for one another; and look forward to sharing the magic of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child again when the time is right.

It’s high time I paid homage to the mighty MuggleNet. Where to start? I love the design, (I currently favour the ‘Dementor’ layout), the polls (I actually voted in the ‘Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?’ one), the pretty-much-exhaustive information on all books and films, the wonderful editorials (more insight there than in several companion volumes I shall not name), 101 Ways to Annoy Lord Voldemort (made me laugh aloud), the Wall of Shame (nearly as funny as some of the stuff I get)… pretty much everything. Webmaster Emerson, Eric, Jamie, Damon, Ben, Matthew, Rachel, Jaymz and Sharon, I salute you.
