Toronto Production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Delayed Until 2021

by Mary Wojcicki · April 16, 2020

The Toronto production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which was due to premiere this October, has been postponed to 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the production has announced.

A post to the official Facebook page for the Canadian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stated that the Canadian premiere of the play has been delayed until 2021. A revised premiere date was not specified in the announcement, although an image attached to the post noted, “More information regarding on[-]sale dates and performance dates will be announced here and on our website.”

An email from Mirvish Productions sent to the company’s special offers and promotions mailing list provided more information about the decision.

Cursed Child is a large and technically complex production. It involves hundreds of artists, artisans and technicians working many months in advance of the first public performance to prepare everything from rehearsals for the new cast [and] the modification of the auditorium, stage and backstage facilities of the Ed Mirvish Theatre to building the sets, costumes and machinery necessary for the show’s acclaimed illusions and special effects. During these uncertain times, we need to ensure we are able to deliver this production safely and on a schedule that is achievable, and therefore, a delay to the production is unavoidable.

The production team behind Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Toronto is “closely monitoring the continuously evolving [c]oronavirus (COVID-19) situation and the orders and recommendations made by Public Health Ontario and Toronto Public Health, as well as the recommendations made by officials in the cities and countries where much of the magic of Cursed Child is made,” the email additionally stated.

While the news is disappointing, we are glad to know that the production is taking the necessary precautions at this time, and we hope to see the Canadian premiere of Cursed Child next year! Are you planning to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Toronto?
