MinaLima Los Angeles Announces Art of the Block Contest

by Mary Wojcicki · June 16, 2020

MinaLima – the graphic design team behind much of the iconic artwork from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films – has announced a new contest for contestants in the United States.

MinaLima Los Angeles has launched Art of the Block, a new contest running from June 16, 2020, to September 1, 2020. The challenge? Contestants have to use “plastic interlocking blocks or bricks” to create an original piece in one of eight categories. Additionally, each submission must incorporate a STEM element.

Contestants are invited to use their favourite plastic interlocking building blocks or bricks to create an original work in one of the following categories: Magical Worlds, Architectural Wonders, Fantastic Creatures, Mummies, Dinosaurs, Mechanical Marvels, Robots or Movie Magic. Each submission must incorporate one element of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) and should highlight creativity and the courage to create new things.

Contestants can submit a photograph of their completed work to the contest’s official website. Also available on the website are full submission guidelines, contest rules, and exhibition information.

MinaLima adds that winners will be announced on October 1, 2020, by MinaLima Los Angeles partners Eddie Newquist and Robin Stapley. Winners from each age group category will receive a MinaLima art print and a unique Art of the Block T-shirt. Winning submissions will be displayed online in the Art of the Block virtual exhibition, and an official exhibition is planned for a 2021 premiere in the US.

Miraphora Mina, cofounder of MinaLima alongside Eduardo Lima, was quoted in a press release from MinaLima:

The competition seeks to combine creative imagination and artistic expression with the technical rigour of STEM.

Eduardo Lima was also quoted and emphasized that the contest is “the perfect summer activity”:

“I’m three years older than you were when you fought You-Know– Who over the Sorcerer’s Stone and it’s because of me Malfoy’s stuck back in Umbridge’s office with giant flying bogeys attacking him!”
