Jude Law Talks About Getting Dark for Emotional Thriller “The Nest”

by Brittany Bennett · January 6, 2021

Jude Law, who plays the young and ambitious Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films, took on a new role of an entrepreneur with some deep-rooted issues in the 2020 film The Nest.

Law plays Rory O’Hara, an entrepreneur who relocates his family from America to England as a stock trader and financier with his old firm. With high expectations, things are most definitely not what they seem. Law spoke with the Los Angeles Times and weighed in on his character.

It’s a drama about a family. At its heart, it’s a love story. It’s sort of a parable of our times: Even though it’s set 30 years ago, it kind of sets up where we are and why we are where we are now. I think it looks really in a very interesting way at the burden of being the Man of the House in the old sense of the word and how that, at times, has affected judgment in the behavior of men.

The constant pressure to deliver for his family powers this domestic drama. All the while, he is hiding the truth from his wife, Allison, played by Carrie Coon (Gone Girl, Avengers: Infinity War). Law’s initial impression of his character was extremely unlikable, and he worked closely with scriptwriter and director Sean Durkin to make Rory more seductive and likable.

It was important to me that Allison, his wife, wasn’t seen to be foolish to be with this guy. You didn’t see his full colors straightaway. You had to wait for the layers to peel away before you understood what his motives were.

With the film being set in the 1980s, Law realizes that how the world sees his character is far more important than how he is truly feeling on the inside. This era started the mantra of “greed is good.” He wants all the best things for his family – the best schools, a beautiful home, the finest clothes – and it takes the character time to realize that to get good out, you must start from within.

I was like, ‘Oh, he’s gotta be dashing and quite lovable.’ And then you realize slowly, ‘Holy crap, this guy’s got major issues!’ That suddenly became the challenge and also became the aim.

Check out the dark and thrilling trailer for The Nest below.

Taking on iconic characters isn’t new to Law. In fact, the actor recently broke down his most iconic roles. This is definitely a film we’ll be adding to our list to watch soon. The acting seems phenomenal. Will you be watching this film or have you already? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
