“Cursed Child” San Francisco Delays Reopening to November

by Adam Poncharoensub · April 17, 2021

Last December, it was announced that the San Francisco-based performances of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would be further postponed with a slated reopening date of May 30, 2021. Unfortunately, Potter fans and theater enthusiasts of the Bay Area will have to wait a bit longer to experience the wizarding world onstage, with the producers having announced that the play will be suspended for an additional six months.

Yesterday, producers issued a statement that further delayed the resumption of Cursed Child San Francisco performances through November 28, citing the “safety and peace of mind of all [their] audience members.” For those who currently hold tickets, expect communications regarding the option to exchange your tickets.

On March 11, 2020, the impending threat of COVID-19 necessitated regulations on gatherings in San Francisco, causing all Cursed Child performances at the Curran Theatre to reduce audience capacity to 1,000 persons. The following day, however, it was announced that all performances of Cursed Child San Francisco in March would be suspended. The Cursed Child productions in New York, London, and Melbourne would eventually follow suit and suspend all shows through March. Further suspension announcements would be continuously issued throughout the year, leaving the rest of 2020 without any Cursed Child performances.

At the moment, the two other Cursed Child productions in North America remain on hiatus with no set return date. Recently, it was reported that Cursed Child on Broadway is currently at odds with its insurance company, leaving its fate unknown. In January, the London, England, production of Cursed Child slated a return in July, so let’s keep our broomsticks crossed for that date to stick. Initially meant to debut in March 2020, the first non-English-language production of the Harry Potter stage play, based in Hamburg, Germany, is expecting to open its doors in December, with previews beginning on November 23.

Thankfully, Potter fans in Melbourne, Australia, have been blissfully enjoying performances of Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre since February.

For those of you in the Bay Area, do you see yourself venturing out to the theater to catch Cursed Child in November? Would you take your family for a post-Thanksgiving outing? Let us know in the comments.
