GeekyCon Wrock Review

by Rachael Dechert · August 6, 2015

Wizard rock is always my favorite part about Harry Potter conventions. This is the only time that you can find so many great wrock bands in one place. Here are a few of the amazing bands that performed at GeekyCon 2015.

Tonks and the Aurors

Tonks and the Aurors performs feminist wizard rock. Steph Anderson uses her new song “Yes, All Witches” to promote feminism and Harry Potter. This set made me want to HuffleRiot all the way to the merchandise booth to buy all of her music.

Lauren Fairweather

Lauren Fairweather’s music is very emotional and passionate. I love how she takes small lines from the books and turns them into these fabulous songs. After her set, I just wanted to play her song, “It’s Real for Us,” to everyone I know. Her album The Prince’s Tale is one of my favorites, and her shows are always a must-see.

The Whomping Willows

Every year I look forward to seeing the Whomping Willows perform. This year, I was especially looking forward to hearing them play “In Which Draco and Harry Secretly Want to Make Out.” They replaced the line “you can move to Massachusetts” with “you can move to the United States of America.” I knew it was coming, but I still was not prepared to hear them sing it. That was truly the best thing that happened at GeekyCon this year.

Draco and the Malfoys

Draco and the Malfoys

Draco and the Malfoys is my favorite wrock band. I have been to a few of their shows, and they are amazing. Brian Ross always looks so happy to be performing. He constantly has a huge grin and puts so much energy into his performances. Brian’s guitar solos are a highlight to every concert. Bradley Mehlenbacher is a fantastic guitar player, and his ukulele playing added so much charm to the folk tunes section of the concert. Their set makes you want to “Party Like You’re Evil.”

Harry and the Potters

Harry and the Potters

Harry and the Potters have very uplifting concerts that make you want to change the world and wrock out. Their shows are always silly and fun, but they have a message behind them that love can conquer all. The set ended with everyone singing along to “The Weapon” while standing in a giant circle. Singing “the weapon we have is love” while being surrounded by hundreds of people who love the same things you do is a very powerful experience.

What are some of your favorite wizard rock memories? Who do you hope will make it to GeekyCon 2016? Let us know in the comments.
