Potter DIY: “Harry Potter” Tile Coasters

by Ross · November 8, 2014

Inspired by Pinterest, Colleen from Coll Writes got crafty and decided to make these absolutely amazing Harry Potter-inspired coasters for her sister using pages from her favorite Harry Potter books! Colleen searched through local thrift stores to find a “beaten up” soft cover copy of the books she had planned to use and used Mod Podge Antique Matte to age the pages (you can always photocopy the pages instead if you don’t want to damage any actual books). Keep reading to see how you can make your own!

What You’ll Need:

  • 4×4 white tiles
  • 4×4 pictures
  • Mod Podge (type is optional, but for this tutorial the antique matte version was used)
  • Foam brushes
  • Cork
  • Acrylic sealant (kylon matte finish)
  • Gorilla Glue (optional)

Directions:

Step 1: Apply the Mod Podge to the tile. Place the picture on the tile, and let it dry in place.

Step 2: Cover the surface of the tile with the picture on it with the Mod Podge. Let the first coat dry for a few minutes, then repeat two more times. Let dry for several hours, if not overnight.

Step 3: Cut out a square of cork to go on the bottom of the coaster. The cork Colleen purchased was sticky on the bottom, but since this was her first go at it, she used Gorilla Glue. If you are JUST using Gorilla Glue, be warned – it spreads out as it dries. Just because you don’t see it spilling over the sides after ten minutes, doesn’t mean it won’t leak out after an hour. Just keep an eye on it, or be careful not to use too much.

Step 4: It’s time to apply the finishing touches. Spray the acrylic finishing over the coaster in a horizontal motion. Let it dry, and repeat two more times. Colleen sprayed hers outside because of how flammable it allegedly is.

Step 5: Let it dry for 12–24 hours, and enjoy! Here are some of the other coasters Colleen was able to make- aren’t they awesome?
