Universal Studios Hollywood Says “Evanesco” to 3D Effects on the Forbidden Journey

While 3D technology has taken the world of entertainment by storm over the past decade, it’s not without its detractors. To that end, according to California Informer, Universal Studios Hollywood recently removed three-dimensional stereoscopic effects and accompanying 3D goggles from the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Fans of the Universal Orlando version of the ride can rejoice: Universal Studios Hollywood is replacing the Forbidden Journey footage with the original two-dimensional video projection of its predecessor.

Although the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood has been exceedingly popular, many have suggested that they made the change because of complaints related to the 3D projections, including problems with motion sickness and dizziness.

Overall, despite 3D’s general popularity, it doesn’t seem like the news has been met with much distress. Some have said that the 3D goggles actually took away from their experience, making the animatronics of the ride more difficult to see and making the ride generally less immersive. However, fans of 3D need not despair yet: Universal Studios gave a statement to Behind the Thrills explaining their reasoning:

We continually evaluate our theme park experiences. […] [E]nabling the guests to enjoy Forbidden Journey without 3D is one example of how we[‘]re assessing various opportunities.

Although the change is reportedly permanent, it seems like there could be more improvements coming our way in the future.
