Ten Reasons “Twilight” Is Better Than “Harry Potter”

by Mikaela Renshaw · April 1, 2019

1. There are way more vampires in it.

Look, we all love vampires. They’re the best, so all the best books have to have them. I’ve scoured all the Harry Potter books, and there is only one vampire in them, just one. And he’s not even that interesting. He only shows up for a couple of lines at Slughorn’s party, and then we never see him again. How could J.K. Rowling just ignore this amazing character?

2. That love triangle is just amazing.

Everyone loves a good romance, especially when there’s drama involved. So a love triangle is a perfect way to go. But Harry Potter just doesn’t have that; Harry never agonizes over whether he will choose Ginny or Cho. The movies were a bit better about this since they did add that Horcrux scene with Harry and Hermione kissing.

3. The werewolves actually look like wolves.

The reason people like werewolves is because wolves are amazing. As such, when we hear the word “werewolf,” we expect an amazing transformation into a majestic wolf, not whatever Remus Lupin turned into. Seriously, what even was that?

4. It’s way easier to get through the books.

I’m sorry, but if I want to do a reread of my favorite series, I don’t have time to read seven books. Four, however, is a much more reasonable number. Also, the books are just easier to read in general since the language is simple. They’re perfect for sitting down and relaxing without having to think too much.

5. Edward is much hotter than Harry.

I’m just going to say it; we all know it’s true. He’s just so dreamy and perfect, whereas Harry is, as the books say, scrawny with knobby knees and messy hair. Not exactly the hero of my dreams. Also, he’s 11 at the start of the books, so it’s kind of weird to crush on him. But Edward is already an immortal vampire in the first Twilight book, so you don’t have to worry about that.

6. Bella is a much more relatable character than Hermione.

Look, I am not and am never going to be a super smart witch who knows and casts all the spells in the world and always knows what to do. However, I could be an ordinary girl who moves to a small town in Washington and meets the love of her life. It’s a lot easier to aspire to be Bella. Hermione is a bit of a high bar.

7. Twilight gives you fun choices, like Team Edward or Team Jacob.

When it comes to Harry Potter, who else can I root for besides Harry? I’m not interested in being Team Voldemort. He doesn’t have a nose, let alone abs. Edward and Jacob, on the other hand, are both great options. You really can’t go wrong either way, both in the looks department and because neither of them is actually evil, of course.

8. Twilight is American.

I have to have some national pride, and Ilvermorny doesn’t quite cut it. After all, we don’t know a lot about it, and there’s no book series to go with it. And you can’t really separate the Britishness from Harry Potter, even when you call it a Sorcerer’s Stone instead of a Philosopher’s Stone. So when I want an American story, I turn to Twilight.

9. Robert Pattinson doesn’t get his character killed.

Cedric dies, okay? We only get to see Robert Pattinson in one movie, and then he dies! But Twilight gives us five whole movies where he doesn’t die once. I know what I want to watch over and over again.

10. Twilight didn’t break anyone’s heart at age 11.

All I’m saying is that Twilight never caused any hopeful 11-year-olds to wait all day on their doorsteps, just hoping a letter would come, only to be devastated when it didn’t. So thank you, Harry Potter, for ruining birthdays everywhere. Twilight is clearly superior!
