Head to Hogwarts This Summer: Alnwick Castle to Screen “Potter” Movies

by Helena Everett · August 19, 2021

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, famously known for the on-location filming of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is bringing the magic back with screenings of the first three Potter movies.

The picturesque castle was used as the backdrop for numerous scenes in the first two films. The Outer Bailey was the setting for Madam Hooch’s first flying lesson, where Neville’s broomstick goes awry. It is also where Harry first learns the rules of Quidditch with Oliver Wood.

The Inner Bailey was where Harry and Ron had the unfortunate luck of crash-landing the Weasleys’ enchanted Ford Anglia flying car, and the castle’s Lion Arch led the way to and from Hagrid’s cabin and the foreboding Forbidden Forest.

The Luna Cinema hosts open-air movies at prestigious locations all around the United Kingdom. Alnwick Castle is the perfect choice for a screening of the Potter films. It will feel like you are heading to Hogwarts. This unique experience is happening over three back-to-back nights in September. Philosopher’s Stone will be shown on Thursday, September 2, Chamber of Secrets will be shown on Friday, September 3, and last but by no means least is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on Saturday, September 4. Each night, doors open at 6:45 p.m., and the movie begins at 8:15 p.m.

No trip to Hogwarts – or cinema experience, for that matter – would be the same without a feast. So why not bring a picnic or even head to the Luna Bar, which will be serving a selection of hot food, snacks, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Hot food can even be preordered via a click and collect service – no queues. Now that is magical in itself.

If you will be in the UK on these dates, this is an experience not to be missed. Imagine sitting beneath the stars, watching your favorite characters on a giant screen with state-of-the-art sound. Doesn’t that sound incredible?

Due to social distancing, tickets are limited and must be booked in advance. Ticket prices start at £16, with lower prices available for children and concessions. Head to the Alnwick Castle website to book tickets, discover venue information, or find out anything else you may need to know. The British weather can be unpredictable, but the event will still go ahead even if it’s raining.

What are you waiting for? Grab your most favorite Muggles and have yourselves a wonderful time.

Where is a unique place you have watched the Potter films?
