Wizarding World Alumni and Crew Nominated for Upcoming Awards

by Elyse Maupin-Thomas · January 14, 2023

It’s awards season, and Wizarding World alumni continue to accrue nominations in recognition of their skills. From the individuals in front of the camera to those working behind it, you can see from the list that these talents have yet to stop making magic.

First up, we have the nominees for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts casts are both well represented. Colin Farrell (Percival Graves) is up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in The Banshees of Inisherin, as is Bill Nighy (Rufus Scrimgeour) for his role in Living. Brendan Gleeson (Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody) also appeared in The Banshees of Inisherin and earned a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) scooped a nomination in this category as well, for his chilling performance in The Good Nurse. Finally, The Crown, starring Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge), received a nomination in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category. The 29th annual SAG Awards will take place on Sunday, February 26.

The Costume Designers Guild Awards are also coming up and will be held on Monday, February 27. Jany Temime appears on the list of nominees for Excellence in Sci-Fi / Fantasy Television. Temime lent her considerable artistry to the last six Harry Potter films, winning a Costume Designers Guild Award for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. She is being recognized this season for her work on the first episode of House of the Dragon. Colleen Atwood, who designed for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Mark Sutherland, whose work we saw in Crimes of Grindelwald and Secrets of Dumbledore, are also up for an award. The two are conominated for Excellence in Contemporary Television for their work on the Wednesday episode “Wednesday’s Child Is Full of Woe.”

Finally, the Producers Guild of America Awards has released its list of film and television nominees for the 2023 PGA Awards. The Banshees of Inisherin, starring the aforementioned Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, is nominated for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The Whale, featuring Samantha Morton (Mary Lou Barebone), is also up for this award. The Darryl F. Zanuck Award is considered the biggest offered by the Producers Guild and often seems to predict an impending Oscar for Best Picture.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which stars the incomparable Daniel Radcliffe, also scored a nomination. The parody biopic is up for Outstanding Producer of Televised or Streamed Motion Pictures. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio is nominated for a PGA Award in the Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures category. The film features the voices of David Bradley (Argus Filch) and Ron Perlman (Gnarlack) as well as the musical compositions of Alexandre Desplat, who scored the final two Harry Potter films. The 34th annual Producers Guild of America Awards will take place on February 25.

Potter Quote

“I suggest you both go up to Madam Pomfrey. She is already tending to Miss Fawcett, of Ravenclaw, and Mr. Summers, of Hufflepuff, both of whom decided to age themselves up a little too. Though I must say, neither of their beards is anything like as fine as yours.”
