Now, a group of students from Emerson College in Boston, MA are making a fan film based on the story of Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs entitled The Gathering Storm. Time after time, event after event, the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army has proven its magical ability to throw a unforgettably crowd-pleasing night for all. This is the third annual Harry Potter roller skating event, and past years have drawn in crowds reaching in the hundreds.
For a group of young students in New Bedford, Massachusetts, house points are part of the daily routine! Third grade teacher Carolyn Papas has incorporated a Sorting Hat, House Cup, prefects, and Azkaban into her classroom, in hopes of teaching responsibility, teamwork, and leadership. And just like at Hogwarts, students earn and lose house points, and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the House Cup. We think this is a brilliant idea!
One lucky Manchester (UK) Harry Potter fan could win the chance to meet Shaune Harrison, the man who created the special effects on Lord Voldemort for the film series. Shaune has worked on many blockbuster films, including Harry Potter and Captain America, and won several awards, including one for Art Direction.The Printworks, a Manchester outdoor shopping center, is looking for someone to design its new mascot. The prize is phenomenal and will particularly be of use to anyone looking to become involved in the special effects or film/television production industry.
Back in July, we reported on a tip regarding a Harry Potter-themed Minecraft server called “Dumbledore’s Army.” It was due to open in August of 2013 but was pushed forward to December. At the beginning of 2014, we were granted VIP access by the creators and given a tour of the server. It turned out to be both amazing and extensive.
Every year a memorial lecture is held in honor of English writer Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, to benefit the animal conservation group Save the Rhinos. This year one of the topics of the lecture is “The Science of Harry Potter,” presented by Roger Highfield, author of “Can Reindeers Fly?” and “Super Cooperators.” The lecture touches on such items as Floo Powder, Dragons and the Invisibility Cloak among others.
