Eight Things That Don’t Make Sense in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”

Have you ever watched the Harry Potter movies and gotten irritated by some of their plot holes? Surely we’ve all been there. There are certain things in the story that don’t make sense.

We decided to make a little project and find all the illogical things in each part of the series. We’ve already published the first part, and now let’s move on to the Chamber of Secrets.

1. The Dursleys trying to prevent Harry from going to Hogwarts

We understand Harry caused a lot of trouble to his relatives, who simply wanted to live a normal, happy life. Also, their nephew spending as much time at Hogwarts as possible would be much more preferable for the Dursleys. In that case, they wouldn’t put bars on his windows so he couldn’t leave their house. On the contrary, they’d impatiently wait for September 1st instead to get rid of Harry and not see him for the next 10 months. Ultimately, their actions seem a little irrational.

Uncle Vernon is putting bars on Harry’s window.

2. Knockturn Alley

As we learn in the second part of the story, Knockturn Alley is quite a dangerous place that shouldn’t be visited by normal wizards, let alone kids without adults. These shops should have been situated somewhere else, a secret place for dark wizards only. So why is it situated right in Diagon Alley, full of unsupervised children? It’s like having a weapon or a drug store in the middle of a shopping mall. It simply makes no sense. Why hasn’t the Ministry of Magic done something about this?

Harry gets lost in Knockturn Alley.

3. Harry and Ron going to Hogwarts using the Ford Anglia

Sure, it was a fun adventure for two friends. But why didn’t they simply wait for the Weasleys to get back from the station so they could find a better solution to their problem? We understand that they were 12-year-old boys, and you can’t expect many wise decisions from them, but still waiting for Ron’s parents in this situation would have been the smartest thing to do.

Harry and Ron fly the Ford Anglia to Hogwarts.

4. Dumbledore hiring Lockhart

Gilderoy Lockhart was the most incompetent teacher at Hogwarts. Even the Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr. was doing a much better job at teaching. So why on Earth would Dumbledore hire him? There is a theory among fans that since the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts was cursed, people didn’t want to risk their lives and apply for the job, so there was pretty much no other option. Another theory, or a meme, to be more precise, claims that Dumbledore saw Lockhart and thought hiring him would be a hilarious idea.

Lockhart instructs Hogwarts students at the Dueling Club.

5. Not closing Hogwarts

When the Chamber of Secrets was opened again and Colin Creevey was petrified, the most rational thing to do would be to close Hogwarts because the last time the Chamber was opened, things ended badly. But instead, Dumbledore simply added some restrictions which, let’s be fair, were not helpful at all.

Harry and Filch stand beneath a message that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened.

6. Hagrid sending Harry and Ron to Aragog

Well, to be fair, this one perfectly made sense, at least to Hagrid, who probably trusted his “pets” much more than he did himself. However, Aragog always told Hagrid he was the only human being he or his offspring would not harm. So, sending Harry and Ron straight to the spider’s lair was reckless, even for Rubeus.

Harry and Ron meet Aragog in the Forbidden Forest.

7. No one asking Moaning Myrtle about her death

This is probably the biggest plot hole in the whole series. When the Chamber of Secrets was opened the second time, why did no one think of asking Myrtle about how she died? She was a living (well, sort of living) victim of the crime, and her story would have helped to find out what happened 50 years ago. However, it seems like a bunch of 12-year-old kids were smarter and more logical than the adults, and were the only ones who managed to solve the case.

Moaning Myrtle tells the story of how she died in the bathroom she haunts.

8. Harry and Ron not asking for help from teachers

In Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry and his friends didn’t have much choice but to fight Quirrel on their own because McGonagall didn’t believe their warning. But in this part, their heroism doesn’t make sense. Instead of asking for help from their teachers, they decided to save Ginny themselves, taking the most useless person with them – Gilderoy Lockhart. Why didn’t they go straight to McGonagall, Flitwick, or even Snape? They would have handled the situation much better than Gilderoy.

Harry, Ron, and Lockhart enter the Chamber of Secrets.
