Writing by J.K. Rowling

Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) – MACUSA was created in 1693, and its first president was Josiah Jackson. This government body was different from that of most Western countries in that there was no cooperation between it and the No-Maj government. In its early years, the MACUSA headquarters were fixed in several locations to avoid No-Maj detection. The institution was then moved between several locations over time, such as the Appalachian Mountains; Williamsburg, Virginia; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, D.C. By the 1920s, its headquarters had been moved to New York City and the president was Seraphina Picquery.

14th–17th-Century History of Magic in North America – The history of magic in North America is tied to Native American magic, what life was like for the first European wizards coming to America, and how the Salem witch trials affected the wizarding community. Due to a serious breach of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1790, American witches and wizards live in complete segregation from No-Majs (the American term for Muggles) under Rappaport's Law. Unlike in Europe, American magical and non-magical people do not marry or secretly coordinate their governments. In 1920s magical America, Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a world-renowned institution, four wandmakers with highly individualized talents fulfill the needs of the magical American community, and wizards are not compliant with No-Maj prohibition of that era.

Wizarding Schools – There are 11 major wizarding schools all over the world.

  • Beauxbatons Academy of Magic – The predominantly French wizarding school also accepts students from Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
  • Castelobruxo – The South American school for magic is hidden somewhere deep within the rainforest of Brazil.
  • Durmstrang Institute – One of the most secretive magical schools, Durmstrang is thought to be located in the far north of Europe.
  • Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – The school was started by an Irish woman named Isolt, her Muggle husband, James, and her two adopted sons, Chadwick and Webster. It has four Houses: Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, Thunderbird, and Wampus.
  • Mahoutokoro – A Japanese school for magic is located at the peak of the volcanic island of Minami Iwo Jima.
  • Uagadou – The largest wizarding school in Africa accepts students from all over the continent.

The Potter Family – The name is derived from an occupation meaning "one who makes pottery."

  • Linfred of Stinchcombe – The Potter family descends from Linfred, who was called upon by Muggles for his medicinal services.
  • Hardwin – The eldest son of Linfred of Stinchcombe. He was married to Iolanthe Peverell.
  • Iolanthe Peverell – She was from Godric's Hollow and also the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell. Iolanthe went on to inherit the Invisibility Cloak from her grandfather. She married Hardwin, the son of Linfred of Stinchcombe. Hardwin kept the secret of the Invisibility Cloak, and the couple started the tradition of passing down the Cloak through the generations.
  • Ralston Potter – He was a member of the Wizengamot from 1612 to 1652.
  • Henry "Harry" Potter – He was a member of the Wizengamot from 1913 to 1921 and spoke out on behalf of helping Muggles during World War I.
  • Fleamont and Euphemia Potter – Fleamont took the family gold and quadrupled it. He and his wife, Euphemia, were the parents of James Potter but died before meeting their grandson, Harry Potter.

Ghosts – Ghosts are only 3D imprints of a dead witch or wizard and do not possess knowledge of the afterlife. Instead, they live a half-life since they cannot feel physical pleasure and maintain whatever constraints they had when they were living. For example, if a wizard met his end by having his head severed, he takes that with him into the afterlife. Muggles cannot see ghosts.

The Hogwarts Express – Prior to 1692, students were allowed to arrive at Hogwarts by any means they wanted. After the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, officials were tasked with finding a universal way to get students to the school. No one knows where the Hogwarts Express originates, but ever since then, it has been the only means of getting to and from Hogwarts.

The Marauder's Map – The magic used to create the Marauder's Map is advanced and includes the Homonculous Charm. It is likely that James, Peter, Remus, and Sirius lost the map through the likes of Argus Filch, who was probably tipped off by Severus Snape. Regardless of how the map was lost, its creators lost interest in it as they grew older and more focused on the rise of Voldemort and the Order of the Phoenix.

The existence of the map proved to be a thorn in the side of the author since it allowed Harry to have too much information. Rowling regretted not having Harry leave the map in the office of who was thought to be Mad-Eye Moody. Still, she liked that Harry was able to use the map to see Ginny's movements during  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The Sorting Hat – The Sorting Hat processes thoughts from the four founders, is skilled in Legilimency, and can respond to the thoughts of the people who wear it. The Sorting Hat will not admit that it has been wrong in where it has placed a student and has a near-perfect record for placement in all its years of existence.

Wand Cores – These are the properties and descriptions of the three main wand cores.

  • Dragon Heartstring – These types of wands learn quickly and are full of power. Unfortunately, dragon heartstring wands are the easiest to turn to the Dark Arts.
  • Phoenix Feather – Phoenix feather wands are picky when it comes to finding an owner. Still, the phoenix feather wand produces the greatest range of magic compared to the others.
  • Unicorn Hair – Wands with a unicorn hair core tend to be the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arks. Furthermore, they produce the most consistent magic while remaining extremely loyal to their owners. One drawback is that these wands tend to be less powerful than other types of wands.

History
An offical website for the Wizarding World first launched in 2012 as Pottermore. The site has gone through two major changes and is now Wizarding World Digital, a partnership between Pottermore and Warner Bros.

Early Pottermore

The original Pottermore website, first released to the public in 2012, was an interactive exploration through the seven Harry Potter books. There was a Gateway when one logged on to the site that allowed the user to visit many different places in the wizarding world. This version of the site included a Sorting Ceremony and wand selection along with interactive elements like dueling, potion-making, and a biannual House Cup.

Pottermore Reimagined

On September 22, 2015, Pottermore took down the original site and launched a completely reworked experience. According to Pottermore’s FAQ, these changes were made in an attempt to encompass the new facets of J.K. Rowling’s ever-expanding wizarding world. In the redesign, all chapter Moments were removed as well as interactive elements. This new site allowed users to log in to Pottermore with an email address rather than their auto-generated username from the original one. Pottermore, however, was sure to include a way for users to recover their old account information if they wanted to. This new site included a lot of new writing by J.K. Rowling and a highly anticipated Patronus quiz, which was released exactly one year after the reimagined site launched.

Wizarding World Digital

In May 2019, Pottermore became Wizarding World Digital, a new website organized by Pottermore and Warner Bros. The biggest addition to the new site is the Wizarding Passport, which includes your Hogwarts House, wand, and Patronus. The website is organized in a fairly similar manner as the previous Pottermore site and still includes sections like "Quizzes," "News & Features," and "J.K. Rowling Archive." However, it also includes some new areas, such as "Discover," a section that outlines all official Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts books, movies, locations (e.g., theme parks), and games. Another change to Wizarding World Digital is the introduction of an app and shortly thereafter the introduction of a new Sorting Ceremony where the app uses virtual reality technology to put the Sorting Hat on the user's head.

Original Features

Gateway

The Pottermore Gateway was the home page that showed where you and your friends were in the story, as well as which books were open to the public. It featured your House crest, personal House points, total points your House had earned, and your unique Potterized username. You had access to Diagon Alley to purchase items, Gringotts to keep tabs on your money, the Great Hall to keep track of the House Cup, and the common room to interact with other users in your House. You could also practice spells and brew potions, look at the collectibles you had in your trunk, look at the profiles of your friends, and access your favorites. Your owl was also perched on top of the gateway, and the background was colored according to your House (or the Pottermore purple if you hadn't been sorted yet). The gateway was removed on July 31, 2013, making way for a new home page for members of Pottermore.

The gateway was replaced by a map of Hogwarts and the surrounding magical community. As seen above, the map included not just the school but also other magical places associated with the books, which could be visited. This included the Great Hall, your House common room, Dueling Club, Potions class, History of Magic, Gringotts, Potage's Cauldron Shop, Apothecary, Flourish & Blotts, and Daily Prophet.

Brewing Potions

You could brew potions in three different cauldrons made of pewter (15 Galleons), brass (21 Galleons), and copper (25 Galleons). Each cauldron made potions at different speeds, pewter being the slowest and copper the fastest. With ingredients bought at Diagon Alley and collected in Chapter Moments, users could make different potions, each of which rewarded House points if completed correctly. The potion could fail by adding the wrong amount of an ingredient, leaving it to brew for too long, not setting the right temperatures, crushing things incorrectly, or causing the cauldron to explode. The following potions were available to brew (some were unlocked later in the story):

  • Antidote for Common Poisons
  • Beautification Potion (made in two parts)
  • Cure for Boils
  • Doxycide (made in two parts)
  • Forgetfulness Potion
  • Herbicide
  • Polyjuice Potion (made in two parts)
  • Shrinking Solution (made in two parts)
  • Sleeping Draught
  • Swelling Solution
  • Wideye or Awakening Potion

Spells and Dueling

You could practice spells and later use them in Wizard Dueling against other users. Each user could choose a spell to use against their opponent, and the winner was determined based on the rating of the spells casted. Users could practice against members of the same House or challenge a member of another House in a proper Wizarding Duel. The winner of a Wizard Duel was awarded 5 House points. The spells available for use in Wizarding Duels were:

  • Curse of Bogies (Mucus Ad Nauseam)
  • Dancing Feet Spell (Tarantallegra)
  • Disarming Charm (Expelliarmus)

House Points and Cup

Just like at Hogwarts, your House could earn points for achievements. There was no evidence that you could lose points for your House for breaking rules, though it said that it was possible. You could earn points by winning a Wizard Duel against another House, successfully brewing potions, and finding items in Moments (Galleons did not count). Thee House Cup was awarded periodically to the House with the most House points.

Pottermore Insider

Pottermore Insider was a blog available to all Internet users. It provided the latest updates on news related to the site, including technical issues. It also featured behind-the-scenes looks at the design process, such as for the Pottermore House crests. It featured selected fan art, beginning with the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and continuing in sequence.

PlayStation Home

Pottermore was also available in platform gaming for the PlayStation Home until the closing of PlayStation Home in April of 2015. PlayStation Home was free to use for anyone with a Sony PlayStation console through the console's Internet connection.

In the first installment, users had the ability to roam around two environments from the Harry Potter series: Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express. Clothing and items to adorn your avatar were available for purchase. You could also play interactive games with other online participants, including Book Herding, Card Trading, Pottermore Quiz, and Wizard Dueling.

In the second installment, the House Common Rooms were introduced (all four Houses were made, but everyone was restricted to their own House Common Room), the Great Hall, Charms Class (this area is more of a game rather than an environment, although it's listed as a separate area), and the Hogsmeade houses, the last of which have to be purchased separately outside of the main Pottermore hub.

The third installment introduced the Chess Chamber, the Forbidden Forest, and the Library. The Forbidden Forest had an extremely limited scope compared to all of the other available areas.

The fourth installment was the Dark Wizard's Mansion, which players could purchase for their use. Those wishing to work their magic on the Dark Side could purchase Death Eater robes and masks as well.

Beta Testers and Grand Opening

The website was launched to one million beta testers between July 31 and August 6, 2011. There was a "Magical Quill" challenge, which was a competition in which fans had to solve a clue revealed on the main site, add the answer to the end of a special web address, and then locate the Quill on the site they are taken to. Once they grabbed the Quill, they were taken to the registration page for Pottermore. However, this clue could appear at any time in the day. About 143,000 people were given access each day. After each day's quota was filled, the clue was removed and replaced with a message indicating that registration had closed for the day. People who found the Quill received an email with a validation link that they needed to click within 48 hours, and not all testers received this email, which would grant them access, at the same time. Some people seeking to register had to wait weeks due to the high volume of people wanting the same thing.

Pottermore is now open to the public and anyone can register. The site was originally supposed to open to everyone in October 2011. However, they extended the beta testing period, saying that it was because they wanted to "make Pottermore the best experience it can be before it opens to everyone." No new date for its grand opening was announced for several months. On April 14, 2011, it was finally opened to everyone. They are still developing the site, however, and fixing bugs.

Development and Announcement

Pottermore was in the developmental stage for two years since its incorporation in April 2009. On June 15, 2011, various Harry Potter fansites including MuggleNet began releasing coordinates that led to letters on a website created by Rowling, which used Google Maps to reveal hidden letters that would spell out the title of her secret announcement (E-T-O-T-O-P-E-R-R-M, which people speculated meant MORE POTTER as in another book). Pottermore.com was launched with a "coming soon" message and Rowling's signature. An official Twitter account was also created. Owls gathered on multiple Harry Potter websites. A new YouTube account titled "JKRowlingAnnounces" was revealed to show a countdown with congregating owls. Rowling revealed some details about the site in a YouTube video on June 23, 2011. She also said that it would be open for everyone in October 2011, which turned out not to be true. It was delayed until April 2012.

Pottermore will be the place where fans of any age can share, participate in, and rediscover the stories. It will also be the exclusive place to purchase digital audiobooks and, for the first time, e-books of the Harry Potter series.

Shortly after the announcement of Pottermore, J.K. Rowling held a private press conference. You can read the entire transcript of the event here.
